talksr Posted January 24, 2014 Posted January 24, 2014 Hi, Our server has had several faults relating to Wsus. Yesterday evening, I remote onto it and typed in CHKDSK /F/R onto the command prompt and then rebooted in the hope this would help remedy some of the faults. The server has not come back online since the restart. I am not going to be back in until Monday morning so can't see what could be going on. Does anyone have any suggestions on what could have happened? Chkdsk's can take time but not things long. It has been well over 15 hours now.
difinity Posted January 24, 2014 Posted January 24, 2014 It depends on the fault. I've never run it on a server, but have seen it take over night on a home PC and I've also seen it screw up a few. 1
Kurgan Posted January 24, 2014 Posted January 24, 2014 yeh as its doing a low level bad sector check could takes ages (depends on disk sizes etc.). Ive seen it looping back to sectors its checked too!

Oaktech Posted January 27, 2014 Posted January 27, 2014 We do this a couple of times a year, usually at the start of the summer holidays and at the start of the christmas holidays. It takes up to 3 days to run on our 500gb DCs. 1

I dont know of a way to stop it I have switched machine off because I was desperate to get it back up, this is not recommended but if you do make sure its not doing any repair stuff and looks like its just reading for errors.

Well it has been on since Friday morning and Monday morning (today) it was still going. So pulled plug and when it started up, furiously pressed space bar in the 10 second count down before it tries to do it again. Found this article which explains how to stop it from doing it again. How to Stop CHKDSK from Running on Every Boot Up - HighTechDad I am more than happy to do it in a holiday, but the next one we have, the main electrical switch boards for the school is being replaced resulting in no power for the entire school for the whole holiday.
