Someone explain to me why Win 8.1 and Win 7 are diff in regards to software installs

Right, I'm still trying to get my head around this.

 

Trying to work out why I have some tiles and not others.

 

The ones I can see on my start screen are the ones that I use a GP to install locally on the machines. Okay, fine. BUT there are also programs I've installed locally, like TuxPaint, Junior Librarian etc that refuse to show up.

 

Why is it any different? Is it how the software is written? Is this where I have to start adding GUIDS....

The tiles can be manually added, but over hundreds of computers it is a bit of an annoyance.

I 'm guessing using the GUID's I can add them to my XML that's being shared....but why some but not others?!

^^Yup, you should be able to do it that way, or you can pin them to the Start Screen, re-export the XML and grab the code from that. It is flaky - we couldn't get SIMS to show for ages on them. Eventually, using the GUID method and lots of Windows updates, it appeared.

as long as the shortcut is in the start menu folder (the user has access to in my case I just use the windows 7 redirected one) and the pinned to the start screen its worked no issues for me

Well, my original XML contains them already...for instance TuxPaint...

Hi Little-Miss,

 

Not sure how your copying your layout, but I found the easiest way for me was to use the CopyProfile option.

 

I setup the Start Layout while in audit mode, ran sysprep, then in the unattend file for WDS I specified the CopyProfile option. Now the default user profile has a copy of the start layout I created in audit mode - which included some irregular shortcuts such as mapped drives and shutdown/logout button which I copied to C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs

 

When I tried to use other methods such as the GP option to set layout, or copy the appfolderlayout to default my irregular shortcuts would never show up.
