istanlfc Posted October 5, 2007 Posted October 5, 2007 Right here i go... Im recieving an old computer prob windows 98. Im assuming its not coming with any discs (software discs etc) and i have a downloaded copy of xp on a disc i would like to install on it. Here is my question. Would i need motherboard, graphics card drive disks to install xp or will it already recognise them from the old OS? please may someone reply...
FN-GM Posted October 5, 2007 Posted October 5, 2007 Is this a legit XP Disc? I don't think people will provide support to pirates. What do you mean you downloaded it?
istanlfc Posted October 5, 2007 Author Posted October 5, 2007 i bought it off a friend i dont whether its legal or not. but can you please answer my question im desperate to know.
FN-GM Posted October 5, 2007 Posted October 5, 2007 Is it a hologram CD do you get the little sticker? FN-GM Posted October 5, 2007 Posted October 5, 2007 Sorry i am not prepared to help anyone using pirate software. I will be more than willing to help if you had a legit one or Opensource software. Its illegal to use pirate software its people who use pirate software that drives the price up for the people like us who do pay for it. Sorry I think the topic should be locked. Come back to us if you want to use Linux.
_Bat_ Posted October 5, 2007 Posted October 5, 2007 have a downloaded copy of xp on a disc i would like to install on it. i bought it off a friend i dont whether its legal or not. Is it just me or is that a contradiction? Anyway, you really should buy a copy. If you, like me, disagree with the price of MS software, use linux.
_Bat_ Posted October 5, 2007 Posted October 5, 2007 its people who use pirate software that drives the price up for the people like us who do pay for it. Sorry I wouldn't be so sure. MS get most of their money from businesses who generally pay for their licenses However I agree with what you are saying. It would be wrong to support illegal software on a site like this.
istanlfc Posted October 5, 2007 Author Posted October 5, 2007 Right im sorry for starting a post on this subject is there anyway i can delete this topic
kestrel1 Posted October 5, 2007 Posted October 5, 2007 Instead of installing XP you could try ReactOS: http://www.reactos.org/en/index.html This is free open source software & is claimed to be a replacement for Win XP. The download is only about 24mb. Worth a try, better than using pirate software. You could always have a look at Linux as well. Various versions available for download: http://www.linux.org/dist/list.html
FN-GM Posted October 5, 2007 Posted October 5, 2007 Are you new to computering? another Linux you could try is Ubuntu, SUSE, Mandrake.
istanlfc Posted October 5, 2007 Author Posted October 5, 2007 yes i am new but i would prefer to have XP if it means me buying the the real disc then i will. Im sorry to cause this mess about mentioning the pirate copy.
_Bat_ Posted October 5, 2007 Posted October 5, 2007 Im sorry to cause this mess about mentioning the pirate copy. It's not a problem - we are not here to give you morality lectures . However I'm sure you can understand that this site is a very popular website and has already had legal threats from large companies, we we have to be careful what we do.
FN-GM Posted October 5, 2007 Posted October 5, 2007 This is pretty cheap http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Sealed-Microsoft-Windows-XP-Professional-Authentic-UK_W0QQitemZ330170588788QQihZ014QQcategoryZ41888QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem
istanlfc Posted October 5, 2007 Author Posted October 5, 2007 ive found a cheap one off ebuyer.com thanks anyway
FN-GM Posted October 5, 2007 Posted October 5, 2007 To be honest if it had Windows 98 on the machine it will probably be very slow if you load XP on. If you want to make it fast you can upgrade parts eg memory but it will probably not be worth it. It will probably better if you get a new computer with Windows XP or Windows Vista Pre-installed. Dell still make machine with Windows XP Installed.
istanlfc Posted October 5, 2007 Author Posted October 5, 2007 thats what i was thinking but im still going ahead by putting 512mb RAM in.
