Iain.Faulkner Posted August 5, 2016 Posted August 5, 2016 after hay fever and then a bad chest cold, I'm hobbling off onto the injured list. Plantar fasciitis - sharp pains in my left heel like I'm stepping on a drawing pin in bare feet. Think that means there is no chance of doing the Dublin Marathon this year. Gutted to hear this, hope you're off the injured list soon!! I went out last night for my first run in a while, tough hot and sweaty 5km. Just 4 and a bit weeks till the Wigan 10k!!

Sorry to hear that @jdoyle hope you're off the injured list soon! Went out for my first run in a while last night....a tough and sweaty 5km! 4 weeks on Sunday till the Wigan 10k, and now signed up for the Stockport 10k in 6 weeks as well :-) Running enthusiasm well and truly back!!
jdoyle Posted August 5, 2016 Posted August 5, 2016 thanks Iain. Good to hear the enthusiasm for running is back! Had a session with a physio last night. That was more painful than the running. I've to do a few exercises over the next 10days to stretch the foot and calf. He has OK'd me to run 3miles a couple of times a week so will see how that goes.
HarryMonkey Posted August 5, 2016 Author Posted August 5, 2016 Well, my other half has now completed week 5, the final run of which is a whole 20 minutes non stop. Whilst she was shattered afterwards, she enjoyed every minute and is looking forward to the rest of the program. 2

Well done her :-) My wife has just restarted Couch25k, did week 1 run 1 last night and seemed pleased with how she had got on 2
Iain.Faulkner Posted August 8, 2016 Posted August 8, 2016 Another tough and sweaty 5km last night, but again pleased I got out and did a run :-) 1
RobD Posted August 8, 2016 Posted August 8, 2016 I started running 3 times a week using a running app, first three weeks were brilliant but on the fourth week the insides of my knees started to really hurt (feels like bruising). Ibuprofen gel helps a lot and I've made sure I'm not running heel toe and tried to only run on grass but anyone else got any tips apart from maybe stop for a week or so?
HarryMonkey Posted August 8, 2016 Author Posted August 8, 2016 If it's hurting, stop! You could end up doing more damage. Talk to your GP. Are you wearing proper running shoes or just a pair of trainers? This can make a huge difference. ... Get some proper running shoes. What sort of distances are you doing? If you've just started then you will need to start slowly and build up gradually. 1

Join a running club or a gym, or get a PT so that you can see what is going wrong. I am thinking of starting the couch to 5K thing. I used to run a lot but had to give it up due to the arthritis in my feet. But the worst joints have been fused and I am wondering if I could have a go again. I must get on and do something. 2
HarryMonkey Posted August 9, 2016 Author Posted August 9, 2016 I am thinking of starting the couch to 5K thing. Do it !! I'm going through it for the second time ... my partner decided she wanted to do it so I said I'd do it with her, just about to finish week 6 on Wednesday, she's absolutely loving it. Local running clubs quite often have C25K groups so you can do it as part of a group. 1
RobD Posted August 9, 2016 Posted August 9, 2016 Yes proper trainers from a running shop (they made me run around and looked at my pronation) but must admit I'm probably due a new pair. I'm running/walking about 2 miles at the moment, I think I will seek advice from a runner or PT to check if I'm not doing anything daft and if it starts to hurt again I'll visit my GP. Its a shame as I've been really enjoying running and this has soured it slightly, I have a long commute and instead of lying on the sofa moaning a run has perked me up.
Iain.Faulkner Posted August 12, 2016 Posted August 12, 2016 Couple of nice runs this week, 6.3km on Wednesday then after getting my dates mixed up did a nice quick 5km last night :-) Hopefully get out on Sunday for a slightly longer run, probably aim for 7km I would think 1
witch Posted August 12, 2016 Posted August 12, 2016 Didn't manage to get started this week Next week my old running partner from years ago is available during the day so maybe I will start running with him.
Iain.Faulkner Posted August 31, 2016 Posted August 31, 2016 Been a while since I put an update on here :-) Done a decent amount of running the last few weeks, 5 runs in total 2 x 5k, 1 x 6k and 1 x 7k then my final bigger run on Monday of 9k in preparation for the Wigan 10k this Sunday. I'll get round the 10k ok but won't be breaking any records I don't think....more about building up to the Stockport 10k in 2 weeks time 1
AJWhite1970 Posted August 31, 2016 Posted August 31, 2016 My OH has started doing the C25K so I'm doing it with her. She's about to start Week 3 and really enjoying it, first time in her life she's run without the incentive of something large, loose and angry with 4 legs close behind... As I've got 2 weeks until I start football refereeing again this season, the regular running is also helping me stay in shape as I'd gained a few (lots) of pounds while I was out with a broken foot and 18 months on I'm finally feeling comfortable running again and the plantar fasciitis is under control with new custom fit insoles in my running shoes and football boots 2

My OH made the same decision and I have done it along with her. She's just finished week 9 so I am really proud of her (And myself for having done it twice now) 1
Iain.Faulkner Posted September 6, 2016 Posted September 6, 2016 Wigan 10k last Sunday, wasn't really expecting much in terms of fast times (probably working on about 58 minutes)....ended up doing it in 55:36 :-) Really really pleased with the time, which is my second fastest proper race 10k time and only 40 seconds outside my PB. Pushed it really hard from the word go, was absolutely knackered at the end, but so so pleased with the time :-) Time to push on with the training ready for the Stockport 10k a week on Sunday :-) nice recovery 5k tonight I think. 1
jdoyle Posted September 9, 2016 Posted September 9, 2016 My running of late is appalling sadly. The plantar f has taken it's toll and I am running like an absolute leaden gobdaw :-( Had to miss Paras10 last weekend. Doubtful about Dublin, Bournemouth and Swindon HM's and definitely a no go for Dublin marathon next month. Before this set in my eldest had offered to buy a couple of sessions with one of the local Personal Trainers, knowing that I wanted to beat a couple of PBs and improve the end part of my marathon. I've now done the 2 sessions despite the injury. Did a "steady" 3mile run yesterday with the PT over one of my standard routes. Dreadful compared to what I've done previously. Last part of the assessment was video analysis. Head on and from the back, all was good - head position, shoulders, hips, feet all good though knees looked like they might knock as they pass (they don't but it looks damn close). Side on was a different story and a lot of work to do - not enough back swing on the arms, footfall slightly too far forward (explains why my knees feel like they are acting like brakes at times), not enough leaning forward and not enough backwards movement on the legs. While the timing is poor with the injury, the analysis has been really useful and gives me something to look forward to. Wish I'd done it before. 1
Iain.Faulkner Posted September 13, 2016 Posted September 13, 2016 Sorry to hear you're still struggling @jdoyle fingers crossed you're now on the mend and you'll be back running soon. Looks like my planned 10k for this Sunday is off due to injury :-( pulled my left hamstring playing football last Thursday, and it's still not right :-( Plus now my left hip is sore as well :-( Going to have the week off running and see how it is by Sunday, but it's not looking promising.
jdoyle Posted September 13, 2016 Posted September 13, 2016 thanks Iain. I'm back running but it is woeful. Did a 4mile run on Saturday trying to run on the toes to take on the advice from the video analysis. Felt quite good but it is using the calves differently and they were a bit solid on Sunday. Injury is a big frustration. Hope the hamstring isn't too serious.
Iain.Faulkner Posted September 14, 2016 Posted September 14, 2016 4 miles is better than nothing :-) Hamstring isn't too bad (I don't think), it's not stopping me playing golf and walking around I just don't want to stretch it too much by playing football/running. It's been tight when I run for months, even with significant amounts of stretching before and after runs, so I'm hoping that now it's pulled a bit it might sort out all the problems I've been having with it.
Iain.Faulkner Posted September 19, 2016 Posted September 19, 2016 Hamstring stopped me running in the Stockport 10k yesterday :-( definitely better than it was, but still not right (did a light jog down the road and back and it still hurts a bit)....just going to continue with the rest I think and give it a bit of a workout each week with a round of golf :-)
Tesla Posted September 21, 2016 Posted September 21, 2016 My running has gone out the window this year. Hoping to pick it up when the nights draw closer (Currently very self conscious about running in the daytime in plain view of everyone....) 1
jdoyle Posted September 21, 2016 Posted September 21, 2016 My running has gone out the window this year. Hoping to pick it up when the nights draw closer (Currently very self conscious about running in the daytime in plain view of everyone....) Used to be the same re self conscious. Don't care two hoots nowadays - I think going with a group and having fixed run times was the big change. Night running brings it's own issues though with lights, reflective clothing etc.

Don't care two hoots nowadays - I think going with a group and having fixed run times was the big change. Night running brings it's own issues though with lights, reflective clothing etc. I was also incredibly self conscious when I started running. I was around 20 stone when I picked it up and was worried people would laugh at me, point at me, beep their horns. I've only ever found people to be really supportive, other runners say hello and wave and getting out there and running has done wonders for my confidence. 2
