BatchFile Posted January 10, 2014 Posted January 10, 2014 (edited) ... but it is Friday so that sometimes doesn't take much! I've got two Win7 teacher laptops with the same bizzare problem. When accessing one particular server (PDC, also hosts most of the printers, Running Server 2003), for examply by typing \\servername in the run box, they fail with "the network name is no longer available". However, they can resolve the server name to the correct ip to ping and can access all the resources by ip address (eg \\10.xxx.xxx.xxx\printername). These two observations, together with the fact that only these two laptops are affected, are really confusing me! If it was DNS everyone would be affected, they can resolve the address ok (for a ping) and can access the resources by the IP but not via the name. They can also see all the other servers normally so the networking seems ok??? Incidentally both have up to date and working Sophos AV... I only mention this as I'm beginning to suspect foul play...? I've tried: ipconfig /flushdns adding the server to the hosts file adding the server to the lmhosts.sam file Anyone got any better ideas before I reimage them both?! ninjabeaver Posted January 10, 2014 Posted January 10, 2014 Have your turned IPV6 off on the Win7 Clients? I sure that was what I had with a similar issue here on a few PC's. 1
BatchFile Posted January 10, 2014 Author Posted January 10, 2014 It wasn't, but that hasn't fixed the issue :-(
twin--turbo Posted January 10, 2014 Posted January 10, 2014 Have you confirmed the DNS settings and done an NSLOOKUP have you tried by \\server.domain\ also look in the Advanced section of the TCP/IP V4 at the DNS page and confirm that only these options are set Append Primary and coonection specific DNS suffixes Append parent suffixes........ Register thsi conn........ Rob 1
BatchFile Posted January 10, 2014 Author Posted January 10, 2014 Curioser and curioser... \\server.domain works. NSlookup looks ok too DNS looks as I'd expect and the advanced Tcp/Ip stuff is as @twin-turbo said it should be, too. Wosnext?!
twin--turbo Posted January 10, 2014 Posted January 10, 2014 ipconfig /flushdns are you trying from explorer or iexplore
BatchFile Posted January 10, 2014 Author Posted January 10, 2014 (edited) tried ipconfig /flushdns already (several times ) I'm trying from a run box, so explorer. Also, MS Word crashes when trying to print to a printer connected by server name, ok when printer connected to the same server by ip address. Edited January 10, 2014 by BatchFile
twin--turbo Posted January 10, 2014 Posted January 10, 2014 ipconfig /all whats the "primary DNS Suffix" and "DNS Suffix Search Lsit". and "Connection-Specific Suffix" for the adapter in use? Rob
Michael Posted January 10, 2014 Posted January 10, 2014 Restart the DNS Server service on both servers in turn

BatchFile Posted January 10, 2014 Author Posted January 10, 2014 What, Now?! Oh well, I suppose they'll fail over to each other won't they... Quicker than I thought it'd be but no difference, even after another /flushdns
ijk Posted January 10, 2014 Posted January 10, 2014 Are there any network related errors in the laptop's logs? Are the laptop NIC drivers up to date? This echoes something we came across a while back, but it was in response to NETLOGON errors in the logs. We went down the switch off IP6 route, but that was a red herring. I think it might have been a timing issue between workstation and server. Hope that helps, sorry it's vague. Nic
twin--turbo Posted January 10, 2014 Posted January 10, 2014 At this stage personaly... I would bump it off the domain and back on again for a quick test. Rob
ninjabeaver Posted January 10, 2014 Posted January 10, 2014 Yeah, might well be worth re-networking and check the time and date are correct and in sync with server.
free780 Posted January 10, 2014 Posted January 10, 2014 Are the laptops xp? Do you push out dns settings though gpo. Could it be pointing another dns server?
BatchFile Posted January 13, 2014 Author Posted January 13, 2014 Unfortunately this laptop has gone, along with its owner, on the annual ski trip, so it'll be next week before I can do anything further on this one. Just when it was getting interesting, too :-(
BatchFile Posted January 13, 2014 Author Posted January 13, 2014 (edited) Are the laptops xp? Do you push out dns settings though gpo. Could it be pointing another dns server? In that order... No, 7. No, DHCP. Not according to the ipconfig /all. Edited January 13, 2014 by BatchFile Correcting the XP answer
laserblazer Posted January 13, 2014 Posted January 13, 2014 Wer they connecting by wireless or wired? I had a similar problem and it was a switch issue. Rebooted the switch and it was fine.
BatchFile Posted January 13, 2014 Author Posted January 13, 2014 Wer they connecting by wireless or wired? I had a similar problem and it was a switch issue. Rebooted the switch and it was fine. Either one or both - same problem. It also occurs when on my workbench which is a different set of switches and APs
BatchFile Posted January 13, 2014 Author Posted January 13, 2014 I'm just wondering if this might be a netbios thing and just need a nbtstat /r... (but I can't get hold of either laptop to check at the moment)
BatchFile Posted January 29, 2014 Author Posted January 29, 2014 Yup, can confirm that this was fixed by nbtstat /R
