Does anyone know away of copying files from a windows directory to a 'my files' section of elgg so when a user logs on they will see all the files or is this not possible?. I have tried and the files which I have pasted will not be displayed within elgg?????? any ideas? any help would be great thanks

Unfortunately too many other things to do atm and little interest from teachers/SMT. From what I understand it is quite a common setup, there are howtos: https://eduforge.org/wiki/wiki/nzvle/?pagename=MoodleElggHOWTO and google pulls a lot advice. TBH I'm not really sure if you can do what you describe with the windows share. To be really cutting edge you'd need to integrate the filesystem with Alfresco - now that would be special - and then you could drag and drop from windows shares or ftp or webdav or http. A google of alfresco and moodle reveals that work is in progress to get moodle to use the JSR-170 repository (that alfresco uses) - it looks like its been put back to moodle v2.0 2008 though

Not sure if it does the file sharing you are describing exactly but you can try it out. It does allow the teacher to export files from a Moodle assignment to the Elgg portfolio. 1

We also have a trial elgg set up - it's quite exciting, almost an in school bebo! but no moodle integration yet as I have to see how the teachers get on with it. Elgg will prove extremely useful for the new year 7 curriculum. 1

I've already got some kids (7,8+9) using it and some of the ICT teachers have given positive feedback, but so far there is more sites about ps3's than there is schoolwork. I suspect it will take a while for the teachers to understand the cross curriculum benefits. I may take a look at Mahara as well

I don't think alarm bells are totally ringing for ELGG as they've just had outstanding success at Brighton Uni where they've got a 36,000 user account install I'll have a look at Mahara though, it looks very interesting

Not to worry; not a single Elgg developer has defected to Mahara, or any other project. Catalyst did make some contributions a couple of years ago, but they have never been part of the Elgg team. Where this leaves Elgg though, I'm not sure. It leaves us with one in seven UK institutions either having installed Elgg or considering an install; with what was the first ever campus-wide, institution-owned social network, running at the University of Brighton; with a new version about to be released that addresses long-term issues like full import/export, data portability and mobile access. Packt Publishing just released the excellent book Elgg Social Networking, by Mayank Sharma, if you're interested in finding out more. Elgg has a very solid business model, but remains free and open source under the GPL v2 (and always will). Beyond education, it runs as the back-end to sites like UnLtdWorld ? the social network and online platform for social entrepreneurs, the social entrepreneurship social network, and we're going to announce some very major collaborations later in the year. I'd like to invite anyone who's interested in learning more to the Elgg Jam 08, which will take place on June 18th. You can register at ElggJam.
