Gaz Posted January 20, 2014 Posted January 20, 2014 No students (in fact any user) aren't allowed to log in as that could potentially let them disable any features to let them access all of YouTube, that is a feature of YouTube edu it disables logging on and its why you need to also have unrestricted access to add videos. The link in favourites is setup in GP via Internet Explorer Maintenance but I can't find the path as I think an update (IE11) removed it in favour of GPP. The link will then appear in their favourites of their browser. The way that students will view your channel will have to be via a link of some sort as as far as I know they cannot search for the channel. For staff you can add trusted staff members to add videos via "youtube.com/account_school"
witch Posted January 22, 2014 Posted January 22, 2014 I tried a shortcut but that still doesn't work. I just did a shortcut to the channel, but as I can only get the path when I am on youtube it blocks it when I am at school! Any info gratefully received

How about trying a different link to the channel, http://www.youtube.com/(channelname) OR http://www.youtube.com/user/(channelname) I did experience it where youtube.com/(channelname) was blocked, but /user/(channelname) worked but I think they have fixed that since. That is however clutching at straws.

Sign up for YouTube for schools Enable header modification on content filter/proxy Verify header modification is working by navigating to youtube.com you should get redirected to youtube.com/education (or such like link) Sign into YouTube for schools (on an account not effected by the header modification) account and add a playlist for the channel View channel and shout hurrah.

If we say that the account was MySchool and the students tried to access the site http://www.youtube.com/myschool without using the capitalisation they get sent to youtube.com/education. If they typed it in with the full capitalisation i.e. http://www.youtube.com/MySchool they land on the correct page and, by clicking on videos they can see the playlists I have created. edutech4schools Posted January 27, 2014 Posted January 27, 2014 (edited) OK just having a play and seems to be ok so far. If I type http://www.youtube.com I get diverted to youtube/education. After login I am being asked to create a YouTube channel. Now the box says to enter a username (and gender) but should I enter the school name instead. Not sure as can't imagine how it will end up, but would have thought all the playlists and videos should be under a school channel and not a person channel. EDIT: For a Primary School setup. Google does however like to know everything about you and may try and force you to use your name like they did a while ago and its something that isn't reversible. Just enter the school name, its what I did. They shouldn't need a personal name for anything like that.

witch Posted March 19, 2014 Posted March 19, 2014 I am still having issues. I can log on to youtube.com/schools and add to our school playlist. BUT I am unable to sort out a shortcut that links to this list. If I copy the address from the school channel and put it in the browser, it reverts to to YouTube for education. How do I get my playlist to show - either as a shortcut or any other way?

That reverts to youtub for edu as well SWGfL have beefed up their filtering of late - I know it was working before I had my 5 weeks off because I put a shortcut on the desktop and I wouldnt have done that if it didnt - so I wonder...

Looking further into this issue at my other school, it seems that the shortcut to the playlist works but the videos won't play - giving that message about them being unavailable whilst the youtube for education thing is enabled. The school identifier seems to be in the URL. I created them by logging on to the staff proxy so I could get to youtube.com/schools (if logged on normally it just throws me back to youtube for edu), logging on to my account, going to the school playlist and adding videos. I must have done something wrong, but what?
Gaz Posted April 1, 2014 Posted April 1, 2014 Can I suggest that you do a complete do over on this. I.e. make a new youtube account (it doesn't need to be related to the school, this is purely for testing purposes) and get a new header code. It sounds like your ISP is doing it via the URL rewrite method if the school identifier is in the URL. Theres no reason that shouldn't work but I've never tried it that way, as we have Smoothwall we use the header modification method which hides the school identifier from appearing. The issue appears to be with the way users access the videos. I'll setup another test account myself tomorrow and go through it again that way I'll be in a better position to help.
