FishCustard Posted December 17, 2013 Posted December 17, 2013 (edited) While I have for the past nine months or so eaten the food that is served up by the school canteen for lunch, what I got today has made me reconsider. I got a chicken salad baguette where the tomatoes were warm and soggy, the chicken was grey & the baguette was dry and then a muffin which smelled vaguely of meat. Yep. Call me crazy, but I don't think cakes aren't supposed to have a meaty aroma. Clearly they've been storing things where they shouldn't. The point of this ranting is this: can you recommend me any decent microwave/just-add-water type meals that I can keep in the office? Think Pot Noodle but actually edible. Thanks in advance! dhicks Posted December 17, 2013 Posted December 17, 2013 can you recommend me any decent microwave/just-add-water type meals that I can keep in the office? You could get sachets of miso soup - the paste-based ones, not powder (Itsu do nice ones). Henz now do paste-based tomato soup, too. You can get vacum-packed noodles these days, ready to eat - mix the two together and you have a high-end Pot Noodle. I'm sure there'll be somewhere that does dehydrated vegetables that you can just add boiling water too, or if you have a bit of time in the morning you could stick some chopped vegetables in a pot to take to work with you and add boiling water later. Peperami might come in handy, too. 1

I could also have a look on Amazon I suppose, they seem to do everything these days... Thanks!

CAM Posted December 18, 2013 Posted December 18, 2013 Careful with Miso though, I personally find it to be great straight out the pot but rather nasty if it cools even slightly. Soon as it arrives at the table I down it!
HaleStorm Posted December 18, 2013 Posted December 18, 2013 Asda's own "pot snacks" are pretty good, kind of like pasta-n-sauce but in pot form, Chicken and Mushroom pasta, tomato and basil pasta, chow mein noodles, sweet and sour noodles etc etc....they are normally on 4 for £2 as well. laserblazer Posted December 18, 2013 Posted December 18, 2013 I get the tins of chunky soaps from Aldi at 69p. They do a larger selection now, adding lamb with mint and chunky veg. A tin of that and a banana less than £1.00. Can't be bad. On Fridays, I have Aldi Herring in mustard or mango spice sauce. I put it on crispbread. Slightly more expensive at 89p but we all deserve the occasional treat

tech_guy Posted December 18, 2013 Posted December 18, 2013 Soaps? I'm confused. I thought we were talking about food?
FishCustard Posted December 18, 2013 Author Posted December 18, 2013 I mean the canteen food is bad, but it's not so bad I'll contemplate eating soap as an alternative! Thanks for all the suggestions!
NikChillin Posted December 18, 2013 Posted December 18, 2013 Pasta sachets for cups or even the larger sachets, they take 10 mins to cook in microwave but are quite substantial compared to the cup version.
AMLinington Posted December 19, 2013 Posted December 19, 2013 Naked Noodle Ramen Noodle Soups are quite nice, as are the flavoured Uncle Bens Rices (The mushroom one is my favourite). I think the bigger issue here is the quality and storage of canteen food being served to students - have you reported your experiences to SLT?
twin--turbo Posted December 19, 2013 Posted December 19, 2013 I have a food flask, Prepare something at home and it's still hot at lunchtime. Never used the canteen in 5 years.
andrew_91090 Posted December 19, 2013 Posted December 19, 2013 I always buy the Tesco Light Choices meals, costs £1-£1.20, takes 10 minutes in the microwave and you get a good variety eg Chicken pasta bake, chicken tikka masala, sweet chilli noodles etc...
pcstru Posted December 19, 2013 Posted December 19, 2013 The innocent pot things are quite good. Supermarkets tend to have their own versions too.
