I've started to set up a WSUS server on a box running W2K8 R2 x64. My domain is a small mixed (XP and 7) environment at the moment, we're planning W7 rollout over the summer. I've started testing my SUS server, however all my clients that are showing up in the SUS console show "Not yet reported". I've installed KB2720211 on the server, and still can't seem to get the machines to communicate, although the GPO is controlling the settings for the timing and everything. Any ideas?

Can you screenshot the GPO? Have you put in details like the network location of the WSUS server (http://servername - the port number isn't needed on 2008 R2)? Once restarted, you can force a detect run by batch using wuauclt /detectnow.

Here you go: wsus.jpg

sometimes running

wuauclt.exe /reportnow

on the client works (after about 10 mins or so).

I also find that hitting the 'Check for Updates' link the the windows 7 control panel works occasionally too.

Make sure you have the latest Windows Update agent installed too (visit windowsupdate.microsoft.com to check) as this can prevent clients from updating.

A couple of things to check, the versions of wsus server and clients, I had an issue when i moved our from 2003 -> 2008 that wsus server didn't get updated correctly and clients were on later version and wouldn't talk, updated wsus server patches and started working. Also make sure that any GPOs with wsus details are updated to new server, another problem i found where we had 3 copies of windows update server information in GPOs.
