You can add a new drive to your server and then create a new database and move the mailboxes into the new database. However depending on size of database and no of mailboxes you may want to think about splitting the one database down into two smaller ones.

Also keep an eye on white space as this can over inflate a database if you do a lot of archiving or similar.

If you have a database with a lot of white space there are two options. One is time consuming and involves downtime the other is always my preference and involves no downtime. Create a new database and move the mailboxes to it then delete old database. The white space stays in the old database. That's my preferred option the other is an offline defrag using eseutil /z which involves downtime from start to finish.

Can you add space to the virtual drive in hyper-v and then expand the space on the OS?

Also are you backing up your database? If you are not the space might be being eaten by the transition logs. If you run a backup of the DB it will sort the logs out and free up space.

Could I mount a second hdd using hyper-v and create a new db on the new created hdd and then move the user over to db2. Also would circular logging help?
