IE 11 breaks OWA!

Hi All,

 

So I have been trying to avoid IE 11, but my Head teacher comes in to me today complaining that her OWA 'looks all weird' as there is no preview pane and the folders are all in the wrong place!

 

No pressure then, as I sit down and start clicking around for some options with her looking over my shoulder... Nothing!

 

Well, she's off to a meeting luckily and as she disappears mentions something about Windows updates that she let run last night.... With some Goooogling later I find out Microsoft IE 11 (I've hidden the IE 11 update from the other computers but rarely touch this one) breaks the Microsoft 2003 OWA interface (this is from the LEA exchange server not local) and it was OWA 'lite' that we were seeing! Oh and that it's been known for a couple of months (feel I've been neglecting the tech news lately).

 

I uninstalled IE 11 and I read that IE 10 is no better, so I have stuck with IE 9 for now.

 

Anyone have any alternative options?

And why are your LA still running Exchange 2003? They're three versions behind now!

We spoke to Microsoft about this and they actually said to use Google Chrome instead!!!

For anyone who has OWA issues with 2010 and 2013 the latest CU update fixes it. For 2003, they won't release a fix.

 

2007 I am not sure.

I'm sure it's just Exchange 2010, Exchange 2013 or Office 365 which are all OK. Anything else and it's time to upgrade.

 

Interestingly Microsoft haven't specified an End of Support for Exchange 2003 with SP2, but it can't be far off. It'll probably be 2014 for sure.

End of support for the entire Exchange 2003 line is 08/04/2014, and according to Microsoft's Service Pack Lifecycle Support Policy here:

Service pack support ends on the same date.

Quite typical of an LA then really - leave upgrading right to the last minute

Ive not done the latest service pack on exchange 2010 yet and we have had reported problems with IE11. The compatibility work around works otherwise SP3 with the CU update sorts the problem out. Here is what MS say Can't load OWA Premium by using Internet Explorer 11 in an Exchange Server environment

IE11 also doesn't support RemoteApp in Win Server 2008R2 (Incorrect browser error)

 

Using Exchange 2010 here and yesterday a member of staff complained about OWA (I figured it was down to conversation view), when we both tried OWa on my machine there was no preview or conversation mode, or hardly any of the options I was expecting to see.

Seeing this topic made me check and sure enough, my machine has upgraded to IE11

Yeah I read the user agent string and possibly the use of Compatability, only after I'd uninstalled IE 11. Don't think I'm going to miss it for now, so meh...

 

Wasn't sure if I should have done the OP, was worried it was old news and I would get 'yeah, we knew.. you are the only tech in the world who didn't know lol...' but glad it's helped someone else!

We don't actually use Exchange (and I never have), it's an LEA thing that the Head and Admin have to use. I don't have to manage it at all, so didn't look at it having an appropriate forum. Just saw OUTLOOK and thought OFFICE...

Yeah, I didn't know at the time. A quick Google showed me that a few thousand results says it is well known (just had my head buried in the sand obviously).

 

It is a constant struggle to know whether to upgrade software or not. I know that many of my workstations are running out of date OS, browser, Java, Flash and many other programs just because with every upgrade comes a huge amount of work trying to fix what it breaks. In a production/institutional/business environment it just isn't woth the hassle and lost productivity.

 

Just have to balance that with any security benefits, that and the fact that everybody else upgrades and codes for the newer software, so that eventually you cannot access those resources until you upgrade too!
