New Server Room

Woohoo!

 

Managed to get a new Server Room built after the flooding that wrecked my old one!

 

They have given me a space of around 3.598m x 3.104m which is not bad but still cosy.

 

I am think of putiing 2 x 750mm x 1000mm cabs to house my equipment. (with 4 commado sockets from the Ceiling attached to APC powerstrips)

 

I have done a quick Vision scaled drawing of the layout...what do you guys think? Is the layout optimal and any other things I should ask for?

I'd personally put the cabinets against a wall to provide more space with the UPS units rack mounted at the bottom.

 

Obviously not underneath the air conditioner unit

I would need access to side or back of the Cabinet though, The Borri UPS I bought are free standing...although in saying that how often do one need side access for cabinets? It will open up some space with cabs against the wall.

Put one side of the 1st cab agains the wall and come out from there. that gives you front and back access, and you will have enough space for CAB3 when it comes allong.

Is it worth making that 6 commando sockets and 3 cabinets to cover future expansion? Could go for a proper raised floor?

If you could, I personally would spin them 90 degrees and place cab 1 coming off the wall where the a\c is and fit the a\c at the top in front of the door.

Looks similar to my old seerrver room but we had cabinet 1 moved so it was against the wall with cab 2 next to it.

 

I assume the front of ther servers will be facing away from the door (i.e. towards the air con)?

Would it be worth going for a proper hot / cold aisle effect - put cabinets, or a wall section, accross the full length of the room and fill the fronts with blanking plates. Cold air from the air conditioning goes down into the fronts of the servers, hit air rises from the backs and (with a couple of fans) gets pushed out through vents at the tops of the racks back towards the air conditioning unit?

That looks good and if it all fits then I would plan it that way too.

I would pull it off the opposite wall. Then as you walk in the door you can wallk straight on and then left to walk down the back of the cabinets.

 

At the moment you have to walk to the far end, round the cabinets and back up.

It's the little things that help

 

Make sure the infrastructure cabling is not in the cabinet against the wall as it means cabling can only go one way and getting to the other end cab is a pain.

I'd stick with that one. Always better to have the air con mounted at least half way up the wall and blowing low directly at the front of the cabs so that the warm air automatically get's cirulated above the cabs into the intake at the top of the air con.

 

Mind you - If I was building a new server room from scratch, I would not be relying on air con. Be using a small air con pointing at the front of the cab to provide constant temperature controlled intake, and sealed-back cabs with direct cabinet ventilation to the outside for a LARGE saving in the amount of air con needed. Kind of like a modified version of dhick's "cold aisle" plan except instead of having an actual cold isle in the room, the cold isle becomes the back 20% of each cab and all warm air gets sucked straight up and outside.

 

You lucky dab - i'd kill for a new server room.

You should see my old server room after the flood! I think it shocked them into getting a new room :-)

 

I have been thinking about CAT5E/6 cabling for the server, and was thinking of using patch panels to make it neat and tidy, would this be over the top?
