kennysarmy Posted November 20, 2013 Author Posted November 20, 2013 I've had this before and found simply pressing CTRL+ALT+DEL is enough to bring up the login window.... Sadly in our case the PC is not responsive to mouse movements and CTRL+ALT+DEL does nothing.

kennysarmy Posted November 20, 2013 Author Posted November 20, 2013 Interestingly: In safe mode with networking the DHCP service is started and the PC boots straight to CTRL+ALT+DEL but if we use MSCONFIG (from within safe mode) and disable JUST disable the DHCP Client service then the PC does boot correctly....but with it enabled - it sticks at "Please Wait"
kennysarmy Posted November 20, 2013 Author Posted November 20, 2013 Could it be that it's NOT the DHCP service that is the issue - but by disabling DHCP it's preventing something else happening which IS causing the Please Wait issue
kennysarmy Posted November 20, 2013 Author Posted November 20, 2013 If I ONLY disable the GROUP POLICY CLIENT service - the PC also boots correctly and gets the CTRL+ALT+DEL screen within a minute. Could it be a rogue policy somehow half-installed on the PC? If so, how could I flush it out?
kennysarmy Posted November 20, 2013 Author Posted November 20, 2013 So to summarize: Log on as test pupil and hold power button in to kill machine. Turn on PC and it sits at CTRL+ALT+DEL screen indefinitely... Turn off PC and boot in to safe mode with networking, open MSCONFIG - disable Group Policy Client service and reboot. PC boots up normally and users can login. I need to test this fixes the other PC's in the Music dept. that this is affecting so at least it gets them working. But I don't believe PC's in other areas are sticking at CTRL+ALT+DEL indefinitely - but appreciate that an illegal shutdown will take a PC longer to boot up....
kennysarmy Posted November 20, 2013 Author Posted November 20, 2013 Once the PC boots OK and users logon there are no erroneous entries in the event logs....
kennysarmy Posted November 20, 2013 Author Posted November 20, 2013 Another thing I've noticed... If we kill the PC and power it back on we don't get the black screen that states the PC was shutdown illegally and do we want safe mode , safe mode with networking or start normally.... Is this because it's 32 bit as I've just tested a 64 bit windows 7 PC and if I turn that off unexpectedly we do get the above screen.....
kennysarmy Posted November 20, 2013 Author Posted November 20, 2013 Have you tried a new network card? We've now re-imaged an affected PC with windows 7 64bit rather than 32 bit and it's no longer got the problem - to me this suggests it's not a hardware fault. I think we are going to end up re-imaging all the music PC's
kennysarmy Posted November 20, 2013 Author Posted November 20, 2013 Now I'm getting p*ss*d off Another Music PC in my office that won't boot to CTRL+ALT+DEL - did the trick above to disable Group Policy service, restarted - and this one STILL gets stuck at PLEASE WAIT... aaarrrrggghhhhhhhhh
Vegas Posted November 20, 2013 Posted November 20, 2013 Disable IPv6, we've just had the same thing and the following MSI fixed it: How to disable IP version 6 or its specific components in Windows
kennysarmy Posted November 20, 2013 Author Posted November 20, 2013 Disable IPv6, we've just had the same thing and the following MSI fixed it: How to disable IP version 6 or its specific components in Windows Thanks for the suggestion: I added the key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Tcpip6\Parameters\DisabledComponents and set it to 0x11 Rebooting still pauses the PC at "Please wait" but I could nt do the second part of the instructions... I cannot seem to bring up the properties of the Network Connection to remove the tick from Internet Protocol Version 6 (TCP/IPv6) in safe mode and unfortunately Safe Mode is the only way to get on the PC's at the moment. I can try MSCONFIG - disable as mush as possible which might make it get past the "Please wait" screen but try to leave anything enabled that might allow me to get in to the properties screen... Sighs...
Gardinho Posted November 20, 2013 Posted November 20, 2013 If it is DHCP related - Have you tried it with a static IP?
kennysarmy Posted November 20, 2013 Author Posted November 20, 2013 Just booted to safe and removed one of the PC's from the domain.... Still sits at Please wait.....
kennysarmy Posted November 20, 2013 Author Posted November 20, 2013 If it is DHCP related - Have you tried it with a static IP? I can give it a try - but I can't get in to network properties in safe mode
Gardinho Posted November 20, 2013 Posted November 20, 2013 Is it just in one physical area ie Music? Have you tried it with a PCI Network card? Is it for that build on any hardware?
kennysarmy Posted November 20, 2013 Author Posted November 20, 2013 Is it just in one physical area ie Music? Have you tried it with a PCI Network card? Is it for that build on any hardware? Yes just one area - though the PC's exhibit the same issue when brought to another vLAN. So far affecting 6 out of 21 PC's in Music dept. Have nt got a PIC network card to hand - but may get hold of one to troubleshoot further... These PC's in music did have a custom build of Windows 7 32 bit.....so maybe there is something skewy with them, but they've been fine for over a year now.....argghh! looking like a re-image of them all to 64bit windows 7 and time spent re-installing all the music software..... Sometimes you just have to move on
kennysarmy Posted November 20, 2013 Author Posted November 20, 2013 Could a Windows Update be causing this? Perhaps mate, but I've lost the will now....going to get the techie's to start a rolling programme of re-imaging the PC's I've disabled the group policy which auto-turns off PC's which are not logged in to see if the "Please wait" does eventually go - the longest we've left them is an hour - but the one on my desk is now going to stay on all night if necessary....
kennysarmy Posted November 20, 2013 Author Posted November 20, 2013 I just left an affected PC at the "Please Wait" for about 40 minutes then it shutdown by itself... I rebooted it - rejoined to the domain (default COMPUTERS OU) logged in as test pupil and shutdown by holding in the power button. This time I got the screen to give me the choice to boot in to safe mode or continue to boot normally....I chose normal and it brought up the CTRL+ALT+DEL screen almost immediately. I am now going to move the PC back to the music OU and test again....
ghafoor Posted December 10, 2013 Posted December 10, 2013 Any joy with the above issue? this has started happening at out place too. Nearly half the computer suites either gets stuck at please wait or welcome. This started happening about a couple of weeks ago.
mac_shinobi Posted December 11, 2013 Posted December 11, 2013 Turn on verbose messages. Where and how ?
