Angle Grinders - Totally non-IT Question!

I need to cut a slot some 16" long and 0.5" deep in a large paving slab - will this be suitable for the job:

And am I correct in assuming that the adjustable guard allows me to set the depth of the actual grind?

 

Never used one before so looking forward to lots of dust, noise and sparks!

no you can't set the depth.

 

it will do the cut though with a stone blade.

Thanks for your input. The ability to control the depth is really important so I'll carry on looking. Mad as it's a one-off job and afterwards I'll probably never need to use an angle grinder again unless I develop a side-line in robbing cash-machines or something.

i'd be inclined to get a standard grinder (useful) and maybe mod it, add a depth stop to it somehow

You can often hire tools and other equipment like this from places like HSS. Sometimes it's more economical especially if your not planning on using it again.

Allowing for wear on the cutting disk. Measure the distance between the edge and the body of the grinder (the silver bit) subtract the desired depth then use a strip or strips of batten laid along the cut. Hold the grinder vertically with the silver bit pressed down on the batten.

How about a wall chaser rather than an angle grinder?

 

Whatever tool you use if you're only going to use it once hire it.

A portable cut-off saw is what you want, have used a Stihl one a fair bit and it's an awesome piece of kit. You'd need to make a jig for accurate depth control. Otherwise, you'd need a pretty tough router for that material.

this is a good idea, would be worth getting two disks, make a pass with one disk and then another skim pass to make sure the entire cut is at full depth

If it's a one off, you might also consider asking a local stonemason. The cost is likely to be cheaper than hire of an appropriate tool.
