2012 + RDS + IE10 = Headaches

I am setting up a 2012 RDS server for students to log into. They use a website for reading that only works with Internet Explorer and IE10 has been a nightmare and brutally unfriendly. This is after the User Interfaces and Infrastructure has been added (previously known as Desktop Experience).

 

Fixing the issue for all users is the hang up. Here are the problems.

• If flash is installed by default in IE10 with windows 8, then why isn’t it configured to be used by the RDS users?

• Java installs were successful, but java.com says “Verifying your Java version will only work in Desktop mode on Windows 8.” when trying to verify the install with IE.

 

Is there any default solution that configures IE10 on Windows 2012 to work as smoothly as a residential home PC these kids are used to? Or will I be forced to test, and test for hours on end tweaking the 100 or so Group Policy options to get it to work right? I’m having I/O and IRQ flashbacks…. then again I did drink more and felt less pain in the 90s.

What version of IE 10 are you using? x86 or x64

 

I might be going down the wrong track, but I had issues with a 2008 R2 server and IE because I'd set it up to automatically create a desktop shortcut for IE9. What I forgot to take into account is that on a 2008R2 server, Program Files contains the 64bit of IE which sometimes had issues. Modifying the GPP to exclude the terminal server and setting up another preference for 64bit machines pointing to Program Files (x86) fixed a few problems for me.

Install the Desktop Experience feature. It worked for me (2012 R2)
