Hello,

I am helping my auntie look into internet options for her new business. Someone has mentioned if she relies on the internet its best to go for a lease line. What information will she need to provide to get a quote as she has looked online and finding it confusing?

Thanks

Leased lines go between business premises and cost thousands of pounds.

what has probably been talked about is symetric business fibre broadband. And that costs £ thousands too.

you can get asymetric FTTC fiber broadband in many areas from a lot of suppliers.

stick the postcode of the premis into samknows broadband checker and see if fiber is available in the area.

To give you an idea, we pay £1400 a month for a 50Megabit leased line, they are not cheap.

For a PTP leased line or symetric fibre internet service???

Sounds bloomin expensive for a PTP.

Thats for a symmetric fibre internet service, we pay £4472 a year for our private ethernet ones.

Hi,

Have you consider broadband bonding? This is the aggregation of multiple broadband lines to increase speed.

Works well until BT Openreach pile into the exchange and rip the equipment out without notice regardless of whether you're using it or not.

This post may or may not be based on past, bitter experience.

Silly question, but doesn't the answer to the OP's query rather depend on Aunties business requirements? Number of users? Type of Internet activity? How the business relies on the Internet? Any services being hosted locally? etc.

For we know the correct answer could be Business ADSL with 56k Dial backup. On the other hand it could be bonded gigabit fibre, etc.

Edit: Businesses needing more than ADSL, but no the expense of leased lines, may want to investigate Ethern First Mile (EFM) as a cheap, reliable alternative.

If the option is available it would likely be cheaper to get a pair of internet feeds - one via DSL/FTTC, the other via Virgin. One would sit there doing nothing for the majority of the time other than run as backup.

Also will depend on what's being done on it; if gigabytes of data are going over you'd need to watch data limits before slowdown, terms of service etc for businesses...
