Laptop for my girlfriend

It has to be a a standard laptop as it will be her only pc.

 

Does that mean she needs to accomplish more tasks than those you've listed ?...beyond the basic. I'm pretty confident the eee pc can accomplish 95% of the tasks a 'standard latop' can do - as i've mentioned it can run xp and no doubt you'd have usb ports for external dvd drives and so on.

 

Anyway, i don't work for asus so i'll not labour too hard in trying to sell the virtues of the eeepc to you. But to be honest the sub £500 new-notebook market is pretty grim - and i've about as much interest in the lower bowel movements of the welk as i have in 'cheap laptops' from the likes of packard bell and advent. So it's not an area i monitor religiously. Sorry.

Well you've sold me ;-). I like the look of that Eee pc.

 

I keep toying with the idea of getting an X series Thinkpad (X31, X41, etc) on Ebay. Bargains to be had...

I would steer clear if F-S. My experience of them over the last year at this school has been:

 

1. Low build quality - keys coming off, dodgy screens, dodgy DVD drives etc...

2. Poor warranty service - a 10 day repair of one laptop actually took 6 weeks. We also had a server with them, with next day repair warranty which took 3 days for a part to arrive and a further 2 for the engineer to arrive. So our main AD server was down for 5 days...

3. Ugly - compared to most laptops, F-S ones appear ugly now.

 

So... They are cheap for a reason...

I will not touch Fujitsu Siemens with a 10" barge pole as I rate them ponly slighty higher than Acer I will also not my a laptop with an AMD processor and I have never had a good expereinece with them in a laptop.
