I had a problem with a virus which must have messed up some system file

So I tried a Repair Reinstall with a XP disk that I thought was OK

It was the wrong disk for the Computer -

I want to get out of this repair so that I can try the right disk

I put this one in and boot from it and choose repair, and it gets so far and keeps rebooting into the same procedure

Any suggestions?

I think that's what he's getting at, it is XP. If it's your PC I'd get a Linux Live CD, boot from that and recover what you need to a USB stick, chances are the HDD is on its way out if it's as old as the OS

Sorry for what I said. I know some people are stuck with XP even though its only supported for 151 days. You could try connecting the hard drive of the xp computer to another pc and use the sfc command. Use another xp pc.

Other than that you need to get the data by copying by connecting to another pc.
