Sleep issues & keeping all the drivers up to date on all your clients PC's?

We are struggling with random computers around the site (from our 800) that users find in semi sleep mode...I say semi sleep as the lights on the front indicate it should be on and working, all the fans are running but there is no VGA output and the PC is unpingable. In normal sleep mode the power light would pulse.

 

The supplier of our PC's glibbly said - you need to update all the drivers on your PC's.....

 

With 800 computers on site, it's going to take months to send a junior techie out to every PC to check all the drivers are updated!!

 

The only way we can get the PC's operational again is to either pull the plug, which sometimes works, or in most cases we have to open the case and reseat the RAM and then it's OK after that.

 

The problem seems random and sporadic so we can't even target specific motherboards or monitors or operating systems etc.

 

Anyone any ideas or suggestions?

use a power policy gpo to stop them going to sleep?

haha - we are just rolling out power management software that will:

 

turn student PC's OFF if they leave them unattended for 30 minutes

sleep teacher PC's after 75 minutes and admin PC's after 15 minutes.

 

So turning off the sleep mode via GPO is not an option

I don't understand why it's not an option. Your hardware or drivers don't like sleep mode. You should adapt to that fact. Remove sleep mode power options and swap to either turning off, doing nothing OR hibernate...

 

You can change the power profiles using CSE so that the screen and hard drive power off instead of the whole system. not as effective but would help until a solution is found.

 

 

To fix sleep mode: Drivers maybe, change sleep mode in bios to also wake up gfx, or change the sleep mode s1, s3, s4...
