OSX Network Home folder in Sidebar

when a user logs into one of our networked Macs, it maps a drive to their windows home directory and shows a shortcut on the desktop.

 

How do I get this in the sidebar??

 

I know I can do it manually but I want to automate it for all users.

 

Im sure this must be possible???

 

OSX 10.8.5 and WGM 10.8(409)

Hi Admiral208,

 

Are you talking of mapping to the sidebar that appears in each new finder window? Or the dock at the bottom [or side, if you've changed the default settings] of the screen?

 

As WGM has an option to set a mapped mount point under

Preferences > Login > Items

If so, this was automatic for networked home shares up until 10.7 when it was removed but you could still manuly make it visabull. Another Apple idea to make things simpler for your average user!!!!

 

But that sead I do have a hack to bring it back via WGM for 10.7 and 10.8. I will try and export it next week from work and post what I did.

What I ended up doing was to use one computer to macke the home share visabul in sidebar copy the corect plist (com.apple.sidebarlists.plist) and then push out the changes via MCX. It’s not perfect but it works.

 

Run the following in Terminal on your server using the attached Plist from the zip and changing the group to apply it to in WGM.

 

dscl -u DIRADMIN -p /LDAPv3/127.0.0.1 mcximport /ComputerGroups/YOURMACGROUP com.apple.sidebarlists.plist

Yes, I beleve this will also work under UserGroups.

Did this work for you? I am also keen to add the network home location to the sidebar as this makes it a lot easier for users to navigate to their network home when saving files

To do this from scratch: You will want to log in as a user who is going to get the managed preference, and manually configure the Sidebar. Then log into an Admin account and connect to that user's home folder (who has the configured Sidebar), open Workgroup Manager, and add this file...

 

YourNetworkUser/Library/Preferences/com.apple.sidebarlists.plist

 

...to the managed preferences list for your User/Group/ComputerList. Putting these preferences under "Often" if you use "Always" it will brake as it can't merge with existing sidebar list.

The other option is the com.apple.MCX.sidebar preference manifest.

 

You can use smb:// URLs to your/their network home folder.
