itgeek Posted October 10, 2013 Posted October 10, 2013 Hi We have a database that we use in school. I need a method to copy a database from a central location and custom icon to the laptops and certain desktops that updates and copies a new one over every time. What is the best method to achieve this? Thanks
pcstru Posted October 10, 2013 Posted October 10, 2013 Put the DB on a network location and link the icon to a batch file which first makes a local copy of the DB before firing up the program. Assumes your DB is a reasonable size (i.e. the copy doesn't take an hour). (ETA - might not be the 'best' way but should work).
PeteSeddon Posted October 14, 2013 Posted October 14, 2013 Or if you have server 2008 or newer, set up a group policy object to do it for you. No scripting needed. It's also a lot cleaner rather than nasty outdated batch files. The GPP you are looking for is in Computer Configuration\Preferences\Files. Create a new update rule and point the source file to your access DB and the destination to the location you want it to go on your machine. Bear in mind you will need client side extensions installing on your station if it's running XP. Link found here.
