I wonder if anyone has a solution to this request from a DHT that dreams the dream...

The Deputy Head at my school is after an eportfolio system that each child:

  • Can record/evidence numerous 'achievements' in a personal e-portfolio (not necessarily school work)
  • For those achievements to be verified by staff - a credit or point or something like that awarded
  • For the credits to be acculumalted (withing 6 diferent categories of achievement)
  • So that pupils can see at a glance how well they are progressing in a category, and where to improve
  • Then pupils can be awarded a big reward for milestone achievements - Bronze, Silver, Gold

I can't find a solution out there. I know that it sounds like a game-like feedback system, so am well aware of Gamification ideas. But there is nothing that fits the bill.

If there is anyone with the perfect solution out there, I'd love to hear it!

Cheers

Maybe you could accomplish this with a sharepoint workflow? But you'd probably get the most out of that if you were already using it.

But to echo @SovietRussia above, I don't think you're gonna find an out the box solution to do that - it's gonna need some customization.

Thanks guys, I thought I'd have to do this myself. We use the Openhive Sharepoint from Capita, but they've kept us on 2007.

Thanks again.

[Everyone else seems to have the techy how-to parts covered. So, I'm going to focus on the gamification stuff.]

I would try to talk to Extra-Credits. More specifically, James.

And check out these. [More extra-credits]

Gamification | Extra Credits

It's also possible to get James to do a talk at your school, but I don't know if it costs mega-bucks. He IS a consultant... so, I'm guessing it does.

It might also be worth having a look through here:

Have you considered Mahara? Alternatively the newer version of Moodle has Open Badges which is quite a nice feature.

HTH

Mahara is good - last time i used it it intergrated with moodle well too.

Brilliant.! Thanks for the responses. I am really grateful.

We have the (less than perfect!) Openhive on MOSS 2007, and might face a struggle to get a move to Moodle - though Maharah looks like it has come on recently (Moodle too) since the last time I looked.

Good shout about EPraise - looks interesting!

We have just started using EPraise.co.uk | A school reward system designed to motivate students. Integrates with SIMS and allows for custom achievement types and rewards. Students can log in to their area (using AD accounts) and see points / achievements awarded, and can also redeem points in a shop with items we put in there (like jump the lunch queue, etc.) May be worth a look and not too expensive.

JB.

Thanks jbunoomally!

Does your staff and pupils like using it?

I was asked to look into something similar a while back for out IT department, which wanted an xbox style system. I had a look around and found that Open Badges will cover most things problem being most of the stock solution out there to issue them require buying of cloud space and running things at higher level. If someone could hack this down to a VM it would be ideal for most school enviroments
