Techs to PC ratio

1 NM (me) and two full time techs supporting over 1200 devices and 30 servers.

 

We need another network-type person really as my Techs are full on with the desktop side of things and I'm the single point of failure (and also there is too much to do for one person). Hence we're looking for an assistant NM.

Thinking about it further I also agree that it is a bad metric. I included all of our BYOD's and they are maintenance free.

 

I agree but you have to draw the line somewhere - if you were to include all the other devices on the that you support (here its Switches, WAPs, CCTV, Ip Phones, IWB, Projectors, TVs, printers, mobile phones, radios, anything with electricity or a battery) then we'd be all day. I think most of our ratios would be 1:1000+ rather than 1:200-400. I did a quick count when I started here and hit 1000 quite easily - that was 3 years ago!

2 of us , 650 Thin Clients (mobile and static ) & 410 fats including Macs.

 

VDI on the thin clients makes it manageable, convert them to fat devices and it would not be manageable.

 

about 30 Physical servers, and 20 Virtuals on that...

I based mine on the day to day maintenance. We support, repair and maintain the netbooks which are owned by the students and purchased through the school. Most of our equipment is old and as mentioned before 5-10 years old.

To give a different perspective (as in not education IT but development) we have: 1 network engineer (me), 24 workstations, 11 hypervisors, 20 client virtual machines and (currently, though it changes on a daily basis) 237 servers.
