Since upgrading to windows 7 - Server 2012 all users home directory's show up just as "my documents" rather than defined by their user names. This is an issue for our staff that have access to the students network home drives as it not as its not possible for them to search for their home directory.

Hope it make sense!

Any help much appreciated.

a desktop.ini file is beign created int heir home drives and they are they appearing named different.

You can delete the desktop.ini and stop it being created using rules or you can add directory or folder name (can't remember which) to the explorer windows to see the actual name of the folder.

This is a known issue and has something to do with folder redirection. I would do a search of this site as you have a few different options and it has been discussed to death. I opted for moving the students home folder inside another folder which had the correct name. So I now have pupils\pupilname\my documents.

It does give an extra folder to drill down to if you are a teacher but it works.

Windows 7 creates a hidden desktop.ini file that renames the view in Explorer, you can still type in the correct path into the address bar, but that's complex. I ended up using File Server Resource Manager to block ini files, along with exe etc, then doing a search to delete the currently existing ones. It is a pain when moving users to different servers as any existing ini files won't move, my script to move users disables the block, moves people, then enables it again.

Also turn off the reports or it will fill your drive.

Right click on the columns and add Filename to the list. This then shows the actual filename rather than My Documents....I got this from on here somewhere.

Edit: Take a look here

i generally use a sub-folder for "documents" so their username folder still remains un-changed. I then have folders for favorites and desktop so its all in one place.

annoying i know, but its worked on every site i've done :(
