Cheapest Mac Laptop for Apple Configurator

I have just set up 16 IPads using Meraki, but with 16 IPads and a 2MB connection it has ground the internet to a halt, so I have been advised to use Apple Configurator and a Mac Laptop. The problem is I dont own a Mac Laptop. What would be the cheapest secondhand Mac Laptop to do this please?

What version of OS X do you need to run the Configurator? I'd find the oldest Macbook/Mac Mini revision that'll run that OS X version and have a look on eBay.

 

Then of course, there's the Hackintosh/OSx86 route, but...

Compatibility: OS X 10.8 or later https://itunes.apple.com/gb/app/apple-configurator/id434433123?mt=12 which is OSX Mountain Lion which says Apple (United Kingdom) - Upgrade your Mac to OS X Mountain Lion.

 

Your Mac must be one of the following models:

 

iMac (Mid 2007 or newer)

MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminium, or Early 2009 or newer)

MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer)

MacBook Air (Late 2008 or newer)

Mac mini (Early 2009 or newer)

Mac Pro (Early 2008 or newer)

Xserve (Early 2009)

 

So Mac OS's don't go by machines specs (processor/ram/hdd) but rather on the date on purchase? Very bizarre!

If you wanted brand new you could get a 11" Mac Book Air with Edu discount and no VAT for £665.

The OSs do go by specs - 10.8 and 10.9 only support Mac's that have 64-bit EFI.

 

I'm sure you'll agree that model years are much easier to remember though.

I suggest you buy a used 2010 or 2011 Mac Mini unless you have a particular reason for needing a laptop to do this.

We bought a new mac mini for less than £500 a few months back. Do a bit of searching.
