abillybob Posted October 7, 2013 Posted October 7, 2013 Hey Guys Hopefully you can help me out. Whenever a student or teacher saves to their Home Drive from Word etc... It just sits there for 3-5 minutes (save bar full) and then after that time it saves. Though it stops them using the computer while they're saving as the computers come up with not responding on Office Applications until it saves! Anyone have any idea why saving times are so slow Be big help as teachers don't like waiting Haha!!! Thankyouu!
chazzy2501 Posted October 7, 2013 Posted October 7, 2013 Sorry but have you tried the lazy fix:) (off and on again) your server.
Grey-gear Posted October 7, 2013 Posted October 7, 2013 Hello, does this happen to you as well, if not then it could be a permissions causing the slowness. Grey-Gear
abillybob Posted October 7, 2013 Author Posted October 7, 2013 Hi Mate, Yesy I've tried this nothing has happened. It only seems to be Microsoft Office that's having the issue. Notepad and most other applications are quick as hell :/
abillybob Posted October 7, 2013 Author Posted October 7, 2013 @Grey-gear, Yes mate it happens to me also and I'm admin with no restriction's at all. Just mapped the drive and saved from word takes ages!!! Its the same for Shares of which everyone has access to also with no security permissions??
Koldov Posted October 7, 2013 Posted October 7, 2013 I can't remember the exact cause or fix, but I'm sure I've had a similar issue years ago. It was something to do with a broken link to a network drive that Office spends ages trying to contact, before it gives up. Other things I can think of are more to do with the physical drive where the share is, have you checked it's ok, enough space etc? Maybe someone more experienced might pick up on something if you can explain the layout of your system? VM or whatever... Are there other shares on that drive, what else is going on with that server? Any other file you can save there, just to narrow it down to Office? Kol.
abillybob Posted October 7, 2013 Author Posted October 7, 2013 Thankyou, it's definitely just Office. I don't have VM's we couldn't afford it! Instead we have 4 Servers running a file server, Smoothwall, Backup and Domain Controller. The DC controls obviously AD and Group Policy and holds a few other things on it's hard drive like Software to be installed. The DC tells the accounts to map a staff share, student share and H: drive all to the File Server. We have 8TB of storage on the file server so it's not a size issue. I have tried using IP and Name of the server and both happen with the same outcome. I have tried big applications such as photoshop and that saves perfectly fine it's just Office applications.
Grey-gear Posted October 7, 2013 Posted October 7, 2013 I know you may have tried this but have you tried to re-install office to see if that fixes the problem? What version of office are you using?
witch Posted October 7, 2013 Posted October 7, 2013 This might help - scroll down to the answer where the guy talks about the hotfix Excel 2010 very slow to save to network
abillybob Posted October 7, 2013 Author Posted October 7, 2013 Tryed doing that we have Office 13 and Office 7 and both have the same issues!!!
Grey-gear Posted October 7, 2013 Posted October 7, 2013 Had a quick look online and this seems to be the best one I could find: -http://joshuabrauer.com/2006/02/slow-save-as-microsoft-office-applicaitons not sure if it relates though.
abillybob Posted October 7, 2013 Author Posted October 7, 2013 Thanks guys for all your suggestions have tried the Hotfix and used some of the suggested on Grey-gears post but still nothing. I was really hoping the Hotfix would work
Koldov Posted October 7, 2013 Posted October 7, 2013 (edited) Did you scroll further down in the thread of the link that @witch gave about SAFE MODE, and other suggestions. Was the Hotfix for the client or server, do they require a reboot? Is it ALL Office applications? Do they do it to other shares, or just H:\ drive? What about saving to the local machine? When did you notice this and what has changed? Just trying to troubleshoot and narrow down the options... Kol. Edited October 7, 2013 by Koldov
abillybob Posted October 7, 2013 Author Posted October 7, 2013 Hi Mate, Yeah tryed Safe Mode too still the same issue !! Yes it is all of the Office Applications They do it for all Shares Saving to the Local Machine is fine although Users don't have access to the Local Machine only Mapped Drives This started happening as soon as I put a new network infastructure in the school they were using generic user accounts, all accounts where administrators, no group policy..... the list goes on so naturally I locked all users down set GP for teacher and students and mapped home drives to them all. I dont want to give them access to C: drive as it will cause us issues as it has before
fiza Posted October 7, 2013 Posted October 7, 2013 You havent got the file server using an IP address that is also used for something else? I know it sounds silly but I did this so speak from experience!! Worth a check.
witch Posted October 7, 2013 Posted October 7, 2013 It isn't the antivirus scanning everything before allowing it to be saved on the server, is it?
abillybob Posted October 7, 2013 Author Posted October 7, 2013 Hey no there is no IP address conflict and this might sound real bad but at the moment I'm in the process of sorting our our Anti Virus as we don't have any yet the school never has!!
Koldov Posted October 7, 2013 Posted October 7, 2013 Well, from what you are saying at least you might have narrowed it down to Office/network. Do you have any ADM for Office GPO's? What about this: "Ok I tried this by mapping a new drive to 1 folder up and saved a bunch of times with no issues.. I'm not sure why this "fixes" the issues though. The original folder is a remapped "my documents" folder via GPO that maps to a folder shared as \\homedirs\username\my documents I manually mapped a share to \\homedirs\username which seems to save in a normal fashion. The same share (first one) was working fine before the upgrade to 2010." I know you said "all" shares, but did you mean all H:\ drives? Is there any redirected MyDocs to H:\ stuff going on? Kol.
abillybob Posted October 7, 2013 Author Posted October 7, 2013 No redirects and all shares I mean by staff share, pupil share and sims S:, A:, B: and H: all the same
CHR1S Posted October 7, 2013 Posted October 7, 2013 Sometimes a disconnected network drive (not always the one you are saving to either) can give these symptoms, also DNS resolution can. Are the drives mapped via servername or IP? Is the issue happening saving to a local drive? Does the issue happen saving to a UNC?
zag Posted October 7, 2013 Posted October 7, 2013 Check its not trying to save to Skydrive by default first which might be blocked in some way.
abillybob Posted October 24, 2013 Author Posted October 24, 2013 Just to keep you all in the loop I eventually found a fix to this I went on my file server and add a REG_DWORD entry named Smb2 with a value of 0 to HKLM\System\Current Control Set\Services\LanmanServer\Parameters then I rebooted the server and ta-dahhhh!a
