Student Folder File permissions

Hi guys,

 

quick question please

 

In most of the primary schools I visit that have a Server2003/XP setup; each year group/class has their own logon (such as y6, y5 etc) with a folder for each child in the redirected My Documents folder. No individual login names.

 

Now the teachers are getting sick of the children messing about with the folders and accidently moving folders into another, deleting folders etc.

 

Is there anyway I can change the file permissions so that the students can view all the folders in say My Documents; but not move them; but once they click on a folder i.e jbloggs folder they have normal read write access so they can save their work?

No, you cannot. You'll have to move over to per-student logins to fix this.

This is impossible using one user account. NTFS permissions work on AD Users/Groups.

 

In your case, you could possibly force 'Read' permissions only on the 'top level' folder and then read/write access on the individual folders within the 'My Documents' folder.

 

I'm unsure if that'll work though.

The pupils in our Primary have their own logons, and seem to cope okay - keep the username conventions basic (i.e. not jones.nick7543) and use blank or very simple passwords.

Most the schools i work in do have individual student accounts; but the IT Coordinator here seems to think they are too complicated and with an IT Suite of just 15, the computers are shared one between two; so saving to individual user accounts might not be ideal.
