Theldron Posted October 3, 2013 Posted October 3, 2013 I have been looking around for a free (important) network monitoring software, I have tried a few different ones including The Dude, Total Network Monitor, PRTG and The Dude is the closest that came to doing what I wanted, but unfortunately it kept crashing the PC it was loaded onto. It would be fine while I was using it, but in the morning when I came in the PC would need to be restarted as it had crashed, once I had un-installed The Dude it was fine. So my questions are has anyone else had this issue with The Dude? And can anyone recommend a good free Network Monitoring software? I have looked at Nagios, but I am not that experienced with Linux and it sounds like it will take a lot of work initially to get up and running? I have also looked at Shinken, but I just could not get it installed and working (probably having a dumb moment). Cheers
Theldron Posted October 3, 2013 Author Posted October 3, 2013 Cheers Vegas, I should have said we are using Spiceworks for inventory and helpdesk. I have looked at Spiceworks for the monitoring but I am not that keen on the mapping side of it. The reason I like The Dude so much is the mapping side, it is easy to see if something goes down, I want to be able to have a large monitor on the wall in the office and be able to see at a glance if something has gone down/wrong.
Hosker Posted October 3, 2013 Posted October 3, 2013 Not much help but I would not give up we have 4X dude running on 4 old XP laptops that monitor everything. Tempting fate here but we have had no tR+*^% at all. I would give it another go.
Dos_Box Posted October 3, 2013 Posted October 3, 2013 (edited) Strange. I've used The Dude for years and it's never been a problem. Perhaps the crashing is a symptom of a different underlying problem. Were you using the PC as the Dude server? I have always setup the Dude server on an actual server (or virtual) and then used the client on a PC to control it. Did the logs say anything about why the crash occurred and what OS did you have it installed on? Edited October 3, 2013 by Dos_Box
Gongalong Posted October 3, 2013 Posted October 3, 2013 We use the dude also with an overlay of the school. Great stuff! Any indication in Event Viewer what's causing the crash, have you turned off auto-restart?
Theldron Posted October 3, 2013 Author Posted October 3, 2013 I had The Dude installed on a Server, but I have tried it on 2 server running server 2008 and server 2008r2 but it crashed both. I have to admit I couldn't find anything in the event logs that explained the crash. I did setup SNMP on everything, could that have something to do with it?
Theldron Posted October 3, 2013 Author Posted October 3, 2013 I have reinstalled The Dude, but not enabled any SNMP monitoring, ill leave it overnight to see if it crashes or not. I am starting to believe SNMP could be the cause.
