Killer Wasps

When I catch a spider (which I try and do without harming it) and I throw it out of the window on a frosty winters day, I might not be killing it but almost certainly in some cases, the action will result in the death of the spider. I'm also almost certainly responsible for the deaths of many more when I occasionally get fed up with greenfly/blackfly etc and let loose with insecticide. Philosophically, I can't see much difference between a blackfly and a spider (apart from the tautologically obvious), so I think I'm doomed to endless guilt as I put my needs before their lives.

I am sacred to DEATH of spiders . Even just the site of one can have me shaking sweating etc…sometimes even throwing up. Honestly don’t know where my fear come from. However, my GF is not bothered by them at all and will remove them (without hurting/killing them…she’s vegan so won’t kill/hurt anything). I’m ashamed to say I have had to kill a few in the past (if I’m home alone or whatever)…normally from throwing a book across the room as I will not get close!

 

It’s odd…but I guess people are just scared of different things. For example, snakes don’t both me in the slightest. Years back with an ex, we were looking after her brothers house and his pet snake escaped. Panic from the ex…I just found it, walked up to it, picked it up and placed it back home. No worries.

I don't mind [most] spiders and try to avoid killing them where possible..

Wasps however - make me do that Man V Wasp dance of terror (much to the enjoyment of the wife who keeps threatening to video it and post it on FB and/or Youtube!)

 

"Slaters" (aka wood lice) also, for some unexplained childhood reason, also fill me with dread.

As do earwigs - probably from watching Star Trek II (The Wrath Of Khan) - you know the scene!

I dont mind spiders...house flies are the most annoying things ever and the spiders keep them in control

 

and the giant wasps looks like a big handful of NOPE to me..my instant reaction when i saw the photo was "nopenopenopenopenopenope"

Spiders should not be killed unless possibly they are black widows or red funnels and are going for the throat!

 

I'm deathly allergic to wasps so have a good reason for doing the "wasp dance" I try not to have to kill them either

We have lots of the false funnel web spider in my garden. @Sunny how much do you charge to come and electrocute the little buggers or is it just a hobby you will do for free?

My wife can seem to speak wasp and will ask them to leave the house. Oddly they always do.

Your standard £5 electrical bug zapper will take care of any pests! (which looks like a tennis racket)

 

Remember slowly putting it close to a LARGE spider, and watching the electricity spark through into it. All i remember is, the spider did a little YMCA then died.

 

The description made me die of laughter, glad I wasn't attempting to drink anything or eat anything for that matter !!

If its poisonous, dangerous, can cause me or my family pain then its going to get squished. Bhuddist Xen or not, I dont care. I dont mind 'normal' spiders, but poisonous ones can

But that is the point of my post - very few spiders are actually poisonous and the issues caused are due to secondary infections which happen all the time to all sorts of injuries. Flies carry FAR MORE disease than spider bites hurt. Flies crawl over faeces and then crawl on you, or your food...A couple of pet spiders around the house, and flies are hardly ever a problem

When I worked for PGL in the South of France for a summer as a student, we had a "pet" Praying Mantis in the staff room. It was very effective as pest control. It was there that I learned to tolerate anything that ate me... so spiders were encouraged too. As for the massive beetles, it was better to flip those upright with my fingers than watch them being dismembered by the ants.

I'm killing every bugger i see. They could be offspring to the false black widow... i don't know, don't want to find out. My house is not a zoo!

When fly / wasp / bee / spiders start arising, they're all given the same treatment (though wasps and bees tend to hang near the window, so i try to let them out). No insect discrimination, just extermination.
