Windows 7 recording mixer?

Hi.

 

Grrrr. The ICT dept here like to record audio straight from youtube using Audacity. In XP this was no problem, in Audacity you had an option to record from a mixer and away they went. Has anyone found this issue/found a simple solution? (apart from just using a looping cable from headphone to speakers).

 

I don't really want to start adding extra packages (we are CC4) to the network...in case there is an awesome little bit of software I'm missing that would fix this.

If your audio driver has "line-in" you can just enable this, and use it as an input?

I'd just point out to them that Educational-Use doesn't cover copyright theft / breach of YouTube's terms, therefore it's an unsupported request. End of issue.

You'll need to use the latest version of Audacity (v2.0.4).

 

(Windows Vista and later) You can now record computer playback by choosing the new "Windows WASAPI" host in Device Toolbar then a "loopback" input.

Yeah, I'm curious about the legal aspect of this also (first school I've been in where this is a need/request).

Yes i would be very careful about this. I don't allow staff or facilitate them breaching Copyright, Terms / Conditions or Licensing. At the end of the day its "IT's ass" and nothing removes the fact that Education does not mean "immune from committing crimes". So in my humble opinion, you should point out this is completely not ok and even if the school next door is doing it, explain thats also not okay.

 

Sorry "nerve" of mine is schools breaking laws for "connivence" or "money saving", it's still immoral and illegal. Teaching staff should know better!

Indeed - nothing to need clearing up... s'against YouTube's terms of use. Licensed only for use via YouTube or their embeds, end of. As for the content they're recording, that's a breach of mcps, and therefore illegal. Most SLT / higher powers in Edu have little to no knowledge of this, or that for instance school licensing doesn't allow for use of copyrighted photos lifted from google images, or that they can't use that latest chart hit as backing music for a PowerPoint slideshow.
