SteveB_NI Posted September 30, 2013 Posted September 30, 2013 I've got a Acer N2620G desktop which was not allowing me to install Windows 7 on it, so I read on some forums to try enabling AHCI in the bios... big mistake, as now the desktop won't boot - it's not even getting to the post beep. Anyone got any solutions as to how to resolve this issue? Essentially - change the setting back off AHCI. Tried removing the battery / power drain - no success.

LosOjos Posted September 30, 2013 Posted September 30, 2013 If you're unable to access the BIOS, you could try a hard reset - locate the BIOS battery on the mobo, pop it out and wait 10 minutes (probably overkill, but an excuse to go and get a cuppa) then pop it back in and try again - should reset all BIOS settings to factory defaults. Some mobos also have a jumper near the battery you can set to reset the BIOS, try that if the battery method doesn't work.

So will need changing afterwards.
SteveB_NI Posted September 30, 2013 Author Posted September 30, 2013 It was set to the native IDE as default - it was only whenever I was having problems trying to clean install Win7 that I changed it to AHCI and it refused to post afterwards. Can't get back into the bios FN-GM to change it back - hopefully the removing the battery trick will help.
Michael Posted September 30, 2013 Posted September 30, 2013 To be honest, the fact your computer will no longer POST with AHCI enabled - I wonder if it's just a coincidence? I'd still expect the computer to POST, but fail to load Windows and possibly blue screen. The only way to get around the IDE/AHCI issue would be to sysprep Windows or possibly repairing Windows.

I was having problems installing Windows 7 - in that when I booted from DVD / USB drive, it wouldn't let me install due to "a required CD / DVD device driver was missing". I read that to enable AHCI helps to resolves this issue. Before I go and brick any more of our units (we bought 16 of them) can I ask would changing to AHCI make any difference?

Michael Posted September 30, 2013 Posted September 30, 2013 Oh dear indeed! Sounds like that model was a lemon I agree, it does indeed sound like a lemon... I'm surprised as I thought all manufacturers shipped with AHCI enabled by default - especially in 2013!!

Boot from a Windows disc/flash drive, open Command Prompt, run regedit, load HKLM registry hive, modify registry key listed in the KB article, unload hive, reboot. Simple!
