I have a PoE cctv camera that I linked up with this -

Now it powers my WAP fine, however the camera does nothing. They both have the same voltage and amps (12v 1a), should it just work or am I missing something here. (Like it being TP-Link specific?)

There are a number of POE "standards".

 

Are you sure the camera is 12V on POE? it may have a 12V power input but may well require 48V POE.

Your camera requires a proper POE injector that gives it 48v that thing probably means that the WAP is wired internally to suck the 12v from the relevant data lines but is not true poe.

The other possibility is PoE+ which is becoming more common. For example, all of the 48 port Cisco 3560's put into many Birmingham schools (all those years ago) only support PoE and not PoE+

There aren't really 'different' standards for PoE. There is PoE (802.3af) and PoE+ (802.3at). These are both IEEE standards. Any implementations outside of these two standards are non-standard proprietary iterations of the technology and may or may not work with proper af/at devices.

 

Examples of non-standard versions of this include Cisco's original "Inline Power" which predated PoE as a standard, but is forwards compatible in most aspects.

Like a lot of UBNT stuff this is passive PoE using the four redundant wires in your cabling.

If the device is only 100 mb it won't need the other two pairs.

However, it's not PoE compliant or aware so plugging it into an 802.11af or .at switch is potentially dangerous for both devices.

If the autosense doesn't work you fry your device or switch so be certain about what your dealing with.

 

Passive PoE is NOT 802.11af or at its vendor specific.
