"Oops! Something went wrong while taking this photo"

I'm looking at a friend's daughter's Windows 8 Acer laptop.

 

Every time I try and take a photo or video in the Camera app (the standard Windows one), I get an error message saying "Oops! Something went wrong while taking this photo / video."

 

I have stumbled my way around Windows 8 and managed to run the app troubleshooter and the hardware and devices troubleshooter. I've uninstalled and reinstalled the Camera app as well. Nothing has worked so far - the camera used to work fine so not sure why it's stopped. I found Snap.Do installed so have taken that off, but it didn't fix the issue.

 

The other strange thing is that when I try and delete any photos that have already been taken, nothing happens - the photo stays there.

 

Does anyone have any ideas - I appreciate this is not strictly an Edutech issue but would like any help if possible!

Yeah I googled the issue and found the same page :-)

 

The only thing from there I think it can be is the UAC settings which apparently have to be enabled. I have fiddled with it and tried all the different settings but no luck. I'll have a look at the drivers stuff you suggested as well, thanks for taking the time to reply.

to get tifkam apps to work you need uac on iitc they fail if uac is off

No problem. It does mention in step. 4 ref drivers

My bad, so it does! I missed that bit completely going round and round with Windows 8. A case of RTFGA rather than RTFM - cheers!

Am really not sure where to go with this now. I've updated all the driver for the built in web-cam. I've tried another USB webcam and exactly the same error message appeared. I've run all the updates for all apps.

 

I went back to running Windows App checker which suggested problems with the display adapter driver but didn't fix them. So I deleted the driver, let it reinstall on a reboot, and then updated the driver - and the error is still occurring.

 

I think there's something I must be missing with how Windows 8 works ... !

This error message can also be generated if Windows 8 cannot save to My Pictures\Camera Roll. I had it happen on my school network before I fixed the permissions issues.

That makes sense as the library-ms folder is coming up with an error message when I try and access it. Maybe it's nowt to do with the webcam at all, and all to do with the files/folders on the hard drive. That gives me a new avenue to explore, thank you.

Fixed it!! At last. I restored the libraries as per the advice in this thread:

 

Library-ms is no longer working - Fix in Windows 7 and 8

 

Webcam is now working again!!
