Recommend me a NAS for Backup Purposes

Afternoon all

 

Currently looking at specs for a possible NAS Server to look after the backups for a school (a same site / different building kind of solution).

 

The servers have 500GB System Drives and 1TB Data Drives, of which we're probably using about 250GB of the System and 800GB of the Data Drive. We also have a 3TB Archive store on one of the servers which could probably do with being backed up else where too, we're only using around 1TB of this at present though.

 

Ideally, I'm looking for a solution that will offer room for expansion, with the standard hot swappable drives at least in a RAID configuration offering at least 8TB overall storage.

 

So go on, recommend me something. I'm happy to take quotes by PM too.

I'm using a QNAP TS-879U-RP, not caused me any problems for the past year I have it set up as an ISCSi Lun.

I'm not an expert in the storage field, but i could arrange a quick call tomorrow afternoon if you were interested with someone that is so we know exactly what solution you're looking for so we can provide some options accordingly. Alternatively, they could do this over email if you'd prefer?

There appear to be a Synology and a QNAP with 5 drive slots for around £600, they both seem to support raid 5 expansion with additional drives

I've not come across Overland Storage before no, it all depends on ongoing cost as I think at the moment the school just wants to get the data backed up on the other side of the site essentially as all essential data (AD, SIMS) is backed up to county as part of their agreement, it's just too costly to do the whole lot with them.

We have a number of NASs from different manufacturers doing different things. The Iomega Storcentre ix4 we have is pretty quick and reliable. We also have a Netgear ReadyNAS which is acting as an NFS SAN for ESXi backups, which is ace. The Buffalo Terastations (and a Linkstation) we have are pretty useless though, they like to drop their settings and transfer speeds are painful. Won't buy any more of them!

+1 on the comments for the buffalo kit (if its not using windows storage server) they are painful.

+1 for ReadyNAS - used them in previous sites for years and found them reliable. Great support forum too.

+1 ReadyNAS and even better ReadyDATA which now has top end features like block level replication, unlimited snapshots, expansion trays, iscsi, sata, sas, ssd support and 10GBe as standard no extra charge!

Thanks all. I've had a quote through for one of the Iomega ix4 and looks pretty nice, I'll get a few prices for the ReadyNAS too and see where get with the Overland Storage option too (has anyone else had dealings with them by the way? Just to I get an idea).
