Replacement Switches - Tight Budget

I need to look at replacing/upgrading the switches here we have run out of space in the main cab.

 

Currently our main switch is a 3Com 4205T 48 port Super Stack Switch this is in the main cab and is now full. I also have a couple of 24 port PureLan switches that are coming to the end of their life and are beginning to get a bit temperamental.

 

The main problem is that of money. I would normally look at using NetGear Smart Switches but the funds are not available plus I don't really need any management functions on the switches as I am only dealing with no more than 70 machines in total.

 

Any thoughts?

There's plenty of cheap switches for sale at the moment. Everyone's trying to offload their 10/100 stuff. eg

Planet are not everyones cup of tea but they are cheap and my friend has worked with quite afew of these before and he didn't have too many problems

Will not touch Planet with a barge pole as I have had way too many of them fail in the past

I read alot about problems with Planet in the past.

what is the budget for the switches you need, i could check afew more suppliers.

Sod big names, if they are just small end of branch switches just get a load of cheap SumVision ones for <£30. If they break, so what! Just replace it. The county were trying to get us to buy £300 3COM ones and didn't understand that 10 £30 switches made more sence for end of branch small IT rooms.

If the budget will stretch I would go for http://www.ebuyer.com/UK/product/114169 £209 for netgear 48 port 10/100 and 4 1000 ports.

They're the badgers I was talking about, great little switches, completely unmanaged and simple. Only had one fail out of ~20. Prob not very good if you put alot of load on them, so no good for trunk or media centers, but for 23 standard access PCs they are great

you can get HP Procurve 1700-24 (22x 10/100 + 2x 10/100/1000) for around £100each.

 

They are webmanaged switches with HPs lifetime warranty.
