[sims] SIMS reporting issues on some Win 7 PCs

Had an email from a member of staff:

 

I am having trouble running a SIMS report. Every time I run a “behaviour clean slate report”, which I do every week, I get the message “this may take a long time to run” (which it doesn’t usually and shouldn’t as it’s not a very big report). Then I get the “not responding” message at the top and it all crashes. Can you help?

 

She has a clean build Windows 7 PC with SIMS summer 2013 and Office 2010 (we recently moved to a new SIMS server)

This has happened to several users with clean build Windows 7 PCs

 

The SIMS.ini is as follows:

should I be putting in C:\Program Files\SIMS\SIMS .net into the first entry?

interestingly yesterday I had a similar issue with a user running custom reports on a new Win 7 and she had similar issues to above (it does work but takes a long time to then Excel opens) she asks a user to run a similar report with a PC running XP and it works and processes the report fast.

 

 

We also had someone from HR whereby when she updates a single student record it takes 30 odd seconds to save, log in as admin/another user and using the HR ladies' SIMS login, works straight away. (I have tried deleting the SIMS document folder as well and checking her SIMS.ini to ensure its not pointing to the old server via UNC)

I would put that entry in to sims.ini or adjust for prog files (x86) if it's a 64 bit machine.

It's worth running validate memberships / update course memberships / system diagnostics etc. on sims generally.

Next i'd look for the threads that mention office 2010 and sims trouble and make sure the common patches are applied as these can affect office performance / compatibility.

This is just general housekeeping.

Specifically for Win 7, look at permissions on local folders - mimic the settings you can find in simsperm.bat - they need control over the local C drive folders for sims, windows\temp and depending on how profiles are setup some other local folders.
