Hi,

How do you manage your students being banned from the network? We currently put it in a spreadsheet buts its hard to manage. The spreadsheet it basically used to store notes and the status of an account. We would like some software that will doo this, let us add attachments and it would be nice if there was a button in the software that will enable the, or remove it from a group (depending on ban type).

Anyone know of anything? What does your school do?

Thanks

Here, we have a sub-OU of the year group's OU. We just drop them into there - currently that has a GPO which blocks the Flash ActiveX control but it can have a fake proxy or it's just used as a container for disabled accounts. Simple but works for us - bans don't tend to last long.

Right click > disable, type reason in description, type date and who applied the ban. Most students wont re-offend more then twice once you remove their network access.

We have a security group for banned internet as well.

Im more after people telling me what method they do as to storing notes etc. We dont want to use the AD account itself but something external to this.

On a related note make sure they don't borrow other students accounts. If so disable that account too for 'unauthorised usage'. :)

They get put in isolation for a week if they get caught doing that!

A standard sanction for an ICT infringement sounds the most reasonable way of doing things.

We don't take pens and textbooks away from kids if they mess about in English lessons and we don't take ICT learning resources from students either.

Infact we give them laptops when in isolation!

hu?? The sanction has already been applied, thats why they are using someone elses account.

well it is a silly sanction to ban students from accessing learning resources.

Give them a detention instead.

Why are you telling me? I dont make the rules. Detention is for thing like untidy uniform, not bring equipment to school. This is more serious.

I'm telling you because if you point out to your SLT how stupid it sounds then you might not have to ban anyone, thus lowering your workload.

Ask them how often they take away other non ICT learning resources like textbooks.

With respect, to be honest its nothing to do with you how this school is run. Please can we get back on topic and not talk about this again. This thread is not about this.

that's rubbish. If people use other people account they get an internal exclusion.

We used to ban accounts and we did it like this:

Added an extra field in SIMS, had a vb script run 2hourly to check for that field against email address field. If present it would change the ldap attribute to disable the account.

It was managed by Heads of year and was an ABSOLUTE PITA because when banned the kids couldn't do any work. Totally pointess. If you don't want them to do work just send them home.

They are not disabled... They have a internet whitelist. Anyway i am not getting into it.

Makes more sense. Just get a script to query the sims and change the group to the internet whitelist group then.

That's a good idea actually. Could you record network bans in Sims somewhere and have a script to sync that up with active directory/etc I wonder?

We do it for the AUP. Once they are recorded as having it in SIMS the account is enabled for use.
