Dos_Box Posted September 3, 2013 Posted September 3, 2013 The BBC has just run this story about a businessman who parked his car near a new skyscraper in London which is still being built that has been nicknamed the 'walkie-talkie'. Apparently the curvature of the glass surface focuses the sunlight under certain conditions: BBC News - 'Walkie-Talkie' skyscraper melts Jaguar car parts Well, that's the next EduGeek Moderators fun day sorted out for next year then. We can have our own version of those Japanese game shows that involve a certain amount of human endurance/pain
crt404 Posted September 3, 2013 Posted September 3, 2013 Did no one think about the focus point of the parabolic when they were designing the building? They have inadvertently created an archimedes death ray!
Arthur Posted September 3, 2013 Posted September 3, 2013 It's so sunny people are getting sun tans while standing outside Maplin. http://i.imgur.com/aR8AMV2.jpg

Dos_Box Posted September 3, 2013 Author Posted September 3, 2013 If I were Maplin I'd be fitting PV panels now!

Miscbrah Posted September 3, 2013 Posted September 3, 2013 Mr Lindsay said he "could not believe" the damage. The developers have apologised and paid for repairs. To read: Mr Lindsay said he "could not believe" the damage. The developers said "lol bugger off" and then realised Mr Lindsay was rich enough to drive a Jaguar all around central London, and then his legal team phoned up for a chat. The developers then apologised and paid for repairs. 1
ICTDirect_Dave Posted September 3, 2013 Posted September 3, 2013 Did no one think about the focus point of the parabolic when they were designing the building? They have inadvertently created an archimedes death ray! I blame the Martians! They always did love a good Heat Ray *looks for my War of the Worlds CDs*
Sunnyknight Posted September 3, 2013 Posted September 3, 2013 Started laughing when i read this. Buildings melting vehicles... closer and closer we get to the doomsday clock... *giggles*
Dos_Box Posted September 3, 2013 Author Posted September 3, 2013 You could have a lot of fun if they have fitted a pan/tilt base to the building!
TechMonkey Posted September 3, 2013 Posted September 3, 2013 More fun to drive a panel van to that spot with a directional mirror mounted to the side. MWAH HA HA HA, people laughed at me when I said I would rule the whole of London (within line of sight) using the power of the sun!! Now they will see!!!!!!!! OR NOT IF I CHOOSE TO BLIND THEM!!!!!!
Miscbrah Posted September 3, 2013 Posted September 3, 2013 Could put a hotdog stand there and cook them for free for profit.
sparkeh Posted September 3, 2013 Posted September 3, 2013 Hey, is Boris trying to build a Prism Tower from Red Alert 2? http://images1.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20121226075034/cnc/images/8/87/Prism_Tower.jpg 3
Garacesh Posted September 3, 2013 Posted September 3, 2013 (edited) Just hearing this on the radio, apparently small businesses in the area have been complaining that this has also been scorching doorways and carpets setting on fire xD* * admittedly I wouldn't be so amused if it were my business/car/etc As I write this there's a guy who's phoned in.. Tiles cracking, paint literally bubbling, carpets smoldering.. This is a hair salon by the sounds of it, he mentions how the 'smell of burning hair' isn't good for business xD Edit: Apparently, the accidental-parabolic-mirror is throwing all this light onto pretty much the same spot the Great Fire of London started. Domino Posted September 3, 2013 Posted September 3, 2013 Edit: Apparently, the accidental-parabolic-mirror is throwing all this light onto pretty much the same spot the Great Fire of London started. Maybe it'll sort out the hipster plague? 4
Garacesh Posted September 3, 2013 Posted September 3, 2013 Maybe it'll sort out the hipster plague? Nothing short of Nuclear Fallout will do that.. Which makes me think.. Could the Brotherhood of Steel be counted as hipsters, since they're all over pre-war tech?

God bless your hollow soul.
korifugi Posted September 3, 2013 Posted September 3, 2013 Maybe it'll sort out the hipster plague? How? Tell them all that location will be 'cool' when the building is sorted out?
sparkeh Posted September 3, 2013 Posted September 3, 2013 Because of that pic, and ONLY because of that pic, i'm going back onto RA2 tonight. God bless your hollow soul. Premier Alexander Romanov: Is it done, Yuri? Yuri: No, Comrade Premier. It has only begun... Ahhh may have to join you there...
ICTDirect_Dave Posted September 3, 2013 Posted September 3, 2013 Premier Alexander Romanov: Is it done, Yuri? Yuri: No, Comrade Premier. It has only begun... Ahhh may have to join you there... What a wonderful game! So so many nights multiplayer lost to this! (not as many as total annihilation though!)
synaesthesia Posted September 3, 2013 Posted September 3, 2013 You buggers, I've just completed RA3 - might have to fire up RA2 tonight! This story makes me laugh though, I wonder what bright spark architect thought that up.
CAM Posted September 3, 2013 Posted September 3, 2013 I wonder how long until that Maplins store gets set on fire.
