Well I learned something new today - I've seen a couple of headlines about "stans" or "stanning" and was thoroughly confused. Now I know - means "obsessive fan", as in the Eminem song.

Does anyone know if the OED remove words once they have fallen out of useage? I can imagine a lot of slang has a very short lifespan.

OED: Once a word enters the OED, it is never removed so it has to merit its place. We consider a word for inclusion once we have gathered independent examples from a wide variety of sources and the word has demonstrated its longevity by being in use for a reasonable amount of time – ideally 10 years, but five is the minimum. i dont think you want words being removed. In 100 years say someone is looking at a news article about for the sake of argument chavs the word needs to be there so it dosent get lost to time and make stuff effectively illegible. For the letter thorn used on old signs that people read as ye its not a y its thorn pronounced th iirc
