I.E 9 Proxy and default Printer headache in Win 7

Hi all,

 

I am having a nightmare with 2 options that are stopping me from completing my Windows 7 roll-out.

 

I can not get the proxy settings to set in I.E 9 no matter what I try, I have tried all the suggestions in the other threads and the closest I get to getting them in is using the registry setting, the exceptions all set, the proxy address sets but it does not set the tick in the box for "use a proxy server for your LAN2. If I use Internet Explorer Maintenance nothing gets put in for proxy, yet it applies all the other options such as links and favorites.

 

Settings injected using registry under preferences:

"ProxyEnable"=dword:00000001
"ProxyServer"="http://ProxyServername:80"
"ProxyOverride"=""

 

If I had any hair I would be pulling it out as it makes no sense!

 

My second part is deploying printers using preferences and Item level targeting, everything works fine here apart from "set as default printer". The policy puts the correct printers on the machine based on OU but does not set the printer I ticked to be default, it just defaults to Adobe PDF.

 

GP result shows no errors other than Event ID 1085 "Windows failed to apply Folder Redirection policy" which I do not understand as my folders are redirecting fine.

 

Any help advise would be greatly received.

Have you tried GPP Internet Settings for setting the proxy in IE (this is what we use)? I would strongly recommend against using IEM - it's no longer supported on OSs with IE10 installed (it'll actually disappear from the GP console!) and doesn't apply the settings to the newer browser - not helpful if you upgrade soon.

 

As for printers - not sure sorry as we don't use ILT.

I have tried GPP but it only shows I.E 8 nothing for I.E 9 but the settings do not apply.

 

I have set up a WPAD file on my Ruckus Box and set up a DNS pointer but still no joy, very annoying, something that worked flawlessly on XP and 2003 now being a PITA.

GPP Hotfix:

Internet Explorer Group Policy Preferences do not apply to Internet Explorer 9 in a Windows Server 2008 R2 domain environment

 

This is included in the mighty Enterprise Hotfix Rollup:

An enterprise hotfix rollup is available for Windows 7 SP1 and Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1

 

Which should already be part of your build? (and the two additional hotfixes listed in 2775511)

 

IE and GPP stuff has always been a bit funky. Once installed you should probably build a clean GPO on a patched machine and deploy that to your AD OUs rather than try to appply settings from an existing one that may be already be damaged from prior efforts.

 

On your printer problem, have you tried this:

Applied all those and still no joy.

 

When using the Registry method it insets the proxy address fine, but ProxyEnable does not tick the box

I'd be tempted to suggest you drop £200 on a call to MS Support as it sounds broken rather than mis-configured.

If it's any help we use gpp for printers and it never seems to set defaults on first logon. It installs them but doesn't always set them defaults. A log off usually fixes this or wait for gp to refresh

I don't get the option in GPP for I.E 9, 8 is the highest it shows.

That IE8 GPP works fine for IE9 too, don't worry about that bit.

It puts the proxy details I want in but does not tick the use a proxy for your LAN box, so I suppose the question is what would stop that box being ticked, I have used the GPP method and the registry method, both put the details in but none tick the all important use a proxy box.

 

It is really doing my head in.

It does sound as if you have something else overriding the setting somehow - what does a RSOP show for those users?
