Who 'owns' a free email account?

I would have thought it was a reasonable request to ask the person to vacate this account as it was set up for business use by the school. Also as you had the password to the account I think that also proves that you are part owner.

 

Maybe problematic for them if they've let others know of the address and are still receiving mail from them. In this case it's definitely them in the wrong, they should never have started using it for personal use. I'd be wary of treading on their privacy though - be generous and give them every opportunity and plenty of time to vacate the account.

In our AUP in states, "Limited personal use is considered acceptable". We've had a look and the account contains numerous personal emails from countless friends, family members and probably the family dog too. I think the upset is due to them using the account as their own personal one and not exclusively for business use as they were supposed to as set out in our AUP.

 

They had plenty of time in the summer holiday after resigning to put things in order. It's just tough we've taken back the account and they've left their dirty laundry on show.

 

If it ever did go to court (which is very unlikely) the lawyers for the LEA will have a great time reading out some of the personal emails to the court....

Hmmmm, to make a proper professional judgement we would have to hear these graphic details so as to be able to judge the whole case on its technical details...... Ermm really........

Is it a personal name or something like that, the staff member would have a good case.

But if you created the accounts like

then i don't know how she intends to prove it is her account.

 

and if all the addresses you use are in some kind of order like

IT1

IT2

IT3

HR1

HR2

 

and so on.

That's the really frustrating thing about all this - we created the account - and the username consists of the school name, an underscore, and the dept the user worked in. D'oh.......some people.

Lol. I've had some rather interesting (to say the least) e-mails get caught on the swear filter (so they get sent to me and not the recipient).

 

To save embarassment for certain people, I never told them that I'd seen the e-mails.

I once had emails redirected to me from a member of staff ordering s?x toys from an adult site. At that point I changed the filtering so any offending emails were deleted and sender/recipient notified! I have no wish to have any knowledge of these emails.

I would have thought if you have the password and the 'forgotten password' thingy goes to you and not to her, then surely it is your account?

 

BTY: why did you go into her account and not just send her an email warning her that it was to be deleted?

 

I have just deleted the ex-head's account - he left 6 months ago - and he has come up and asked why he can't access it as he needs the email addresses on it!

I am not in the least worried (it is a school easymail so slightly different to your situation) but the new head keeps telling me not to worry!

 

It is just good practice to delete email addresses of people who have left. BUT I am going to issue guidelines on email usage and a reminder that the account will be deleted AS SOON AS the person leaves.

An in-school email would sort out your problem as there can be no argument as to who the email account belong too.
