New Virgin Media Super Hub

I wasn't aware of this, and as I've just renegotiated my VM contract am pretty gutted I hadn't been able to ask for one of these as part of the renewal. The main point about this one is the fact you can use dual-band concurrently whereas with the older version you were stuck with either 2.4 or 5Ghz. I may just go out and buy a dual-band router though and use the older one in modem mode only. Any recommendations for a decent dual band router that won't break the bank??

The new Super Hub looks like the best router out of all of the ones you get from the big ISPs. @Dos_Box. According to the article below, you can buy it for £49 if you are unable to get one for free from Virgin.

 

Comparing to other routers on the market, Virgin Media's latest Super Hub features 450Mbps dual-band Wi-Fi (with three spatial streams on the 5GHz channel, compared to two on the Home Hub 4) and four gigabit Ethernet ports, and is available for £49 for existing customers. Meanwhile the latest Sky Hub only utilises the 2.4GHz band, has a theoretical max throughput of 144Mbps and has four Fast Ethernet ports. With a £69 upgrade price, it's definitely the least appealing of the three. Of course, plenty of other ISPs and 3rd part routers are available. (Source)

I bought a WD N750 dual band router from Amazon and put my superhub in modem mode. I think I probably had too many wireless devices connected (and a full 8-port hub too!) but it was forever falling over, no problems so far with new router.

Can recommend the Asus RT-N66U (Dark Knight - RT-N66U - Networking - ASUS) as being a pretty decent router/dual band wireless point

Would be nice to have a decent AIO product tbh. My current sky router (a Sagem POS) is diabolical. I'd happily stick another router in it's place, however everything these days appears to be designed to plug into an existing router. I've got enough bloody plugs around my TV/router/AV setup as is it :/

The current Sky 101 router isn't too evil, admittedly it hasn't got all the top features but it seems stable to me, its built by Netgear which is a plus so maybe worth attacking Sky to try and get one from them?

For good value I'd recommend Asus RT-N16 with a custom firmware (Tomato/DD-WRT) not all the latest features but a good customisable device.

@Dos_Box. This might be of interest. Apparently you can get a VM Superhub 2 for £20 (or free if you are having speed/WiFi issues)...

Looks good, although quite expensive. At least there shouldn't be any backdoors with its open source firmware.
