mac_shinobi Posted July 24, 2013 Posted July 24, 2013 Currently with sky for everything ( tv, phone and broadband ) Contemplating ditching them for at least tv but just wanted to know if there is another or better provider. I know virgin media are over subscribed so not going back to them for broadband. Unlimited broadband and anytime landline and was contemplating subscribing to now tv ( yes i know thats sky but at least we will get movies and from what i can gather tv series ) Just wanted peoples thoughts / suggestions. Yes im aware of samknows / broadband choices to check what the exchange supports etc and I think its just bt / sky or virgin media ( although could be wrong ) Posting this after reading this post http://www.edugeek.net/showthread.php?t=120367
mrbios Posted July 24, 2013 Posted July 24, 2013 Just ring sky up and threaten to leave them from everything and you'll probably get offered a better deal. Works for a surprisingly large amount of people. As for "better" performance wise on broadband, that depends on whether you're using DSL or FTTC. FTTC no issues, but their DSL i found to have a higher latency than most. 1

synaesthesia Posted July 24, 2013 Posted July 24, 2013 There's little else available: for DSL, Sky are the only true contenders for LLU offering unless you're a complete masochist. Not sure about any latency issues - I game online and my average ping to UK servers is 16ms. I honestly believe the only two offerings of worth are Sky and Virgin. 1

When I do a speedtest.net I get 35ms whats up with that ?

I guess latency wise it depends on a lot of other factors beyond simply being sky, i think my exchange was probably a bit over subscribed, though one could argue it's skys fault for allowing it to be. But certainly where i live i had really poor latency compared to most on sky DSL...at least in comparison to my previous supplier which was BE. FTTC is fantastic though (sorry to rub it in mac_shinobi ) 1
mac_shinobi Posted July 24, 2013 Author Posted July 24, 2013 FTTC is fantastic though (sorry to rub it in mac_shinobi ) Mumble mumble moan. Rushden across the river have fttc / fibre So annoying
synaesthesia Posted July 24, 2013 Posted July 24, 2013 Rushden is one of the best connected towns in the country, BT seem to use it as a testbed without actually announcing anything. 1
