DPM 2012 SP1 / Deduplication / 2008 R2 Storage Server

We currently have DPM 2012 SP1 installed on a server running 2008 R2 Storage Server.

 

Once DPM 2012 SP1 was released many months back (so that it then supports deduplicated data/volumes) I built a Server 2012 VM Server to use as a file server; with the intention of activating and using deduplication.

 

All went well until I found out that although DPM 2012 SP1 supports backing up of deduplicated data/volumes; whilst running it on a 2008 R2 Storage Server this feature is not.

I think it is to do with the fact that 2008 R2 Storage Server only deduplicates at file level; and Server 2012 / DPM 2012 SP1 is (also) at block level...although I may be wrong!!

 

Anyway, although I always prefer to do clean installs of OS's, I am tempted to do an in place upgrade from 2008 R2 Storage Server to 2012...anything I should look out for? Anyone else done this?

You need to uninstall DPM prior to the in-place upgrade. The steps are as follows:

 

1) Backup the DPM 2012 SP1 DPM database.

2) Un-install DPM 2012 SP1 - maintain replica data.

3) Upgrade the Server 2008 O.S> to Server 2012 O.S. Make sure the DPM storage pool disks are imported.

4) Install DPM 2012 Sp1

5) Restore DPM 2012 Sp1 Database using Dpmsync -restoreDB ...

6) Run DPMSync -Sync to make new mountpoints.

7) Run CC to get all datasources green.

No issues for me. Didn't have DPM installed before on our servers but in place upgrade went like a breeze - no ill after effects a couple of months later that would make me suggest a clean install.
