For years we have used a small app called js2prt to connect to printers for students around the school.

All it does is check the location of the computer in active directory and connect to the correct printer.

Are there any better apps out there that do the same thing?

You can do this with Group Policy Print Management or GPP, deploying printers based on per computer, per user or both. This has been possible since Server 2003 R2 and later.

I don't really want printers connecting automatically, just when a user clicks on a shortcut.

Have you got a link to js2print, as it sounds like something we could use

Unfortunately I don't have any clue where it came from, hence why I'm looking to move away from it.

if you want them on demand you can create shortcuts to them just go to your print server and right click drag a printer to a folder/desktop and it creates a shortcut in theory a user could click this to install though i havnt tried it
