Currently we manually install SIMS on all teacher workstations, and when an update is done on the server the client side just updates the next time a teacher runs the program and this works perfectly.

.....BUT we need a way of improving the initial deployment of SIMs. I see a hell of a lot of complaints against SOLUS so I'm a bit aprehensive about that path, but alternatively is there any scripted ways of running it that well set all the options we want without us having to go through the tedius task of going "Next, next, check file path, next *wait for install* finish" etc. Even if it means we still have to log into each PC to run it? or is SOLUS my only option?

@mrbios:

I too like you was a little reluctant to go with the Solus deployment but after the initial shock and a couple of problems it now seems to have settled itself and works just as it is expected to do.

We use all the services Sims, FMS and Discover and once you get your head round it you will be pleasantly surprised :)

I would advocate going down the Solus route after the Summer upgrade which will then support 2012 SQL :)

Good luck to you :)

Thanks @bossman that's reassuring.

On the topic of SOLUS then is it something that can be implemented in the middle of a working day or does it require server restarts or anything like that? I'd like to get something in place within the next 2 weeks ideally before the summer starts. Also is it provided by capita as a free option or is it an extra expense? Honestly never looked into it at all until now so it's all 100% new to me.

You should be able to install it no problem during the day with no restarts needed on either the server or workstation. It's free - it's basically the next release from SOLUS2.0. As @bossman pointed out - theres been a lot of horror stories about it on here but when it does work - it plays nicely.

SIMS is quite happy to be part of an image, and there are quite a few silent install scripts kicking about too if you search here.

SOLUS 3 is the future though.

Do i have to ask capita in order to get a copy of SOLUS3? I've noticed i have a "SOLUS3 infrastructure setup" in my setups folder but upon running it it tells me that my simsinfrastructuresetup is the wrong version.

Also I've heard that someone here has a good guide on setting it up that's a bit more useful than capitas own documentation?
