Wondered whether anyone can help....

I'm responsible for IT in a couple of Primary Schools (teacher not techie!). Our KS2 pupils are driving me crazy about getting a Minecraft club up and running. I know that it should be possible to set up a server (old PC?) but I think that there are other ways too. Just wondered what other schools have done?

ps You guys are brilliant - the advice/information found on your site has saved me so many times!

I'm part of an afterschool club here. It's a generic one but I've set up a MC server, we really only ever have a maximum of five users on it at one time so I just run it off my laptop which seems to work fine.

+1 for MinecraftEdu. We use it here. We have started with just a handful of kids to see what they can do but we're going to start clubs up soon. With minecraft Edu you can control what the kids do whilst they are in the world. You can set up activities etc..

I think the biggest issue you might have is the connectivity to the minecraft servers for authentication, a lot of LEA internet providers block that.

In terms of setting up the club, the minecraftedu is one option, or let them play vanilla with something like worldguard or if they want something a bit more involved FTB is great.

Thanks for the advice.

So does Minecraftedu sit on a server in school or is it off-site?

I have an old MIS server that I could use and our IT service provision is not provided by the LA so dealing with firewalls and proxies isn't so much of an issue. We also have VPN between the schools so one server/licence between two schools is an option.

The server isn't really the main issue - it will run on any modern PC really. (it is something you host internally). Your issue is one of licensing. If you stick with vanilla, all your students who play on it need a Minecraft license. If you run the edu server, it has it's own way of handling licenses I believe and the school just needs to buy some via their site.
