To cut a long story short, we're re-doing a room in the summer. The room in question currently has an old Hitachi projector with one of those ceiling brackets that come down from the roof.

The position of the projector is moving, so I have said that we need a new whiteboard and short-throw projector, as there's a huge supporting beam that runs along this roof and if we move the current projector, the ceiling mount would need to be fixed to this beam, meaning the projector would be a lot lower than it is now.

Are there any laws which require you to have a certain amount of 'head room' as I am wary that this is not going to be safe, and we need a short-throw projector because it would be so low that someone tall (like me) could bang their heads on it.

I rekon it will be about 6.5ft - 7ft off the ground!

I think the relevant health & safety limitation won't be the risk of cracking your head on the projector but the risk of turning round and being blinded by the projector. The Visual Display regs cover this - give them a read, as if there's a good chance of users eyes being exposed to the direct glare of the projector, you'll need a (ultra) short throw solution instead.

dont short throw projectors mount on the wall above the screen and point down rather than on the ceiling?

Short throw are ceiling mounted close to a screen (<1m, I think)

Ultra short throw are the ones that mount above a screen and use a curved mirror to project

I'm looking at this now, but can't find anything on projectors :(

I want to put an Ultra short throw in btw, sorry for any confusion!

The bit I saw on it was on a dead tree copy of some regs a couple of years ago, so can't find exactly what I was looking for - but the NUT have some gumph on it in this Word document (page 11) if that helps any.

Hey thanks, that's useful info - just what I was after :)

As I thought, needs to be an UST projector!
