After installing a new MB and CPU at work I wanted to test its power so decided to buy an old favourite off the internet (HL2). Its been may years since I played it and I loved the whole immersion into the weird universe so was looking forward to having a play. I couldn't get steam to talk through my FW so gave up so took it home and tried it on my i3 laptop. :) Hooking it up with the HDMI cable to a 50" tv was so much fun... sitting on the floor wasn't cos after an hour I was stiff as a board. It plays really smoothly which is amazing really after the beast I used to have to play it on.

I even installed Windows 8 to play it on... a nice clean install just for the game.

Think I might revisit Far Cry next, i used to love FPS and became addicted to finishing them but then a little think called a family got in the way.

Cant see me playing Crysis on full power but the older shooters on ebay are a steal.

Look up GoG.com (good old games) - you can get some modern classics on there too for just a few pounds. I blagged farcry3 and farcry:blood dragon for a fiver recently :D

If you really want to do half life 2 again, ESPECIALLY on a big screen, download the Cinematic Mod for it. It's big (12GB big) but it makes it all very pretty, very high res (up to 4K) textures, soundtrack to make it cinematic (soundtrack is from Batman Begins). It does all of the HL2 (so HL2, ep1 and ep2)

Will give the HL2 mod a lookie. Not sure my little laptop will play it any higher though. Think I will use the schools internet to get the 8Gb file :)

I don't just +1 this mod, I +10 it. It really is worth the download and makes HL2 look epic. :)

When I have some holiday, think I'll relocate my PC to the front room and plug it into the TV! and re-download the mod.

I'm currently picking my way through this AGAIN!

I love this game because even after all these years, it STILL has the capacity to make me jump out of my chair.

I shall be looking for the cinematic mod...... :)

It's good for a marathon too! Start with Black Mesa, then onto HL2, ep1, ep2, then Portal 1 then 2 ;)

And don't forget to start with HL1 classic, or the Black Mesa: Source mod! ;)

That's what I mean by Black Mesa. It's just Black Mesa, no :source or anything ;)

Still looking forward to when they add Xen to that!

My bad, completely missed Black Mesa in you list! :p

Right, I downloaded the mod overnight and had to re-download HL2, Ep 1 and Ep 2. Also got all the SDK's but it won;t work. Seems the mod is dependent on the following being present in the Steam\SteamApps fodler:

episode 1 shared.gcf

episode one 2007 content.gcf

episode two content.gcf

episode two maps.gcf

episode two materials.gcf

episodic 2007 Shared.gcf

source materials.gcf

source models.gcf

source sounds.gcf

Source 2007 Shared Materials.gcf

Source 2007 Shared Models.gcf

Source 2007 Shared Sounds.gcf

Base Source Shared Materials.gcf

Base Source Shared Models.gcf

Base Source Shared Sounds.gcf

half-life 2 episode one.gcf

Out of the list, I only have these:

source materials.gcf

source models.gcf

source sounds.gcf

Source 2007 Shared Materials.gcf

Source 2007 Shared Models.gcf

Source 2007 Shared Sounds.gcf

They should all be created when you install HL2, Ep 1 and Ep 2 yet I have none. Any ideas?

After some searching, it seems Valve ported HL games to a new file container, something called Steam Pipe? It was an automated process and GCF files were all removed as part of this. Having difficulty finding copies of them too. No way to run the mod without copies of these files. :(

With the upcoming Steam Pipe, HL2 and its episodes will be converted to a new filecontainer format, that Cinematic Mod (and most 2007-engine based mods) cannot read, and the old GCF files will be deleted during the conversion process.

You should backup the following files now:

half-life 2 content.gcf

half-life 2 episode one.gcf

half-life 2 episode two english.gcf

half-life 2 episode two low violende.gcf

episode two content.gcf

episode two maps.gcf

episode two materials.gcf

source 2007 binaries.gcf

source 2007 shared materials.gcf

sourcec 2007 shared models.gcf

sourcec 2007 shared sounds.gcf

episodic 2007 shared.gcf

source sounds.gcf

source materials.gcf

source models.gcf

episode 1 shared.gcf

half-life 2 2007 base content.gcf

Seems Cinematic Mod 13 is being built at the moment. Hopefully it;s not too long until it's available!

For those interested, Alpha 1 of the new Cinematic 2013 mod is available! This version is compatible with the new Steam Pipe format and requires none of the files listed above. As long as you;ve downloaded Half-Life 2, Ep 1 & Ep 2 AND launched them all once, your good to go! :)

FakeFactory Cinematic Mod 2013

The Torrent is 9.27GB so up a little in size from CM12! :p
