With graphics cards, always stretch your money to get the best you can afford - otherwise when the framerate starts dropping you'll miss that extra %

Go on - treat yourself :p

In the end then, I went over budget and plumped for a Zotac 780 to drive the 3 dell 24in 1920x1200 monitors. The first monitor arrived on wed and I was in a bit of a dilema - it seemed very small compared to the 28in Hans-G, I wondered if I was going down the wrong road. I gritted my teeth and ordered the rest of the kit which was all scheduled to arrive today so I've taken a 1/2 day to play with my new toys. The worries about the size evaporated - 3 24in side by side is just huge - you just sort of fall into it all. So far I've just turned a few laps on iRacing but the experience with the wide field of view is excellent ... dare I say awesome. The 780 seems to cope easily; 5760x1200 with all the eye candy turned up shows 90fps. Obvioulsy I'll the ultimate test is yet to come - how will it cope with minesweeper.

Thanks again for the contributions.

The more important question, that all of us need to know for our own sake: how did you ever persuade your wife to let you do this?

Damn. I forgot to ask.
